Outer Limits 4x4 Board

G'day guys,

I'm curious about if the factory GQ injected set up can handle low boost applications.

Basically i have an injected GQ that is now on dual fuel. i want to keep dual fuel - so straight gas isn't an option.
Does the GQ have a map sensor at all? or only an airflow meter?

I am lookin at adding extractors and exhaust now. The looking at adapting one of the sc14 toyota superchargers at low boost.

Have seen this done on 3.8l commodores - they only run about 4-5 psi - with gains around the 30kw at the wheels.

I'm thinking that the tb42 doesnt rev as hard as the 3.8 so this baby blower may be enough for a little bit more grunt when needed. i dont need a 300rwkw patrol as i have other toys that do that - but a little more on occasion would be good (like when towing aforementioned toys lol).

With the air flow meter mounted in front of the blower intake it is still measuring the amount of air going in - how far will the factory computer cope and the injectors?

Any ideas would be sweet.

I am not sure about these systems specifically but generally with AFM systems, through experience I have found running the boosted air through the AFM gets a better result as the air temp sensor is usually in the AFM which means better temperature compensation etc.

Also, these factory ECU's are tuneable with the Nistune software used to tune factory Skyline computers. I have had a mate of mine with a standard GQ 4.2 EFI and his was struggling to tow up hills and with a quick remap it went much harder.

So you could probably get away with using an adjustable fuel pressure reg to up the fuel pressure slightly meaning the injectors wont run out of squirt up high but you can remap the whole lot to compensate when off boost.

Where to get it done, In melbourne there is DR Drift in Brooklyn but that is all I know of. If you search Nistune in the Nissan Sylvia or Skylines australia forum there will be more places on there.

Ok - i didnt realise these were re-mappable like the skylines.... thats deffinately good to know.

Having the airflow meter in that side is a different idea - all the turbo's (factory) have the airflow meter on the intake side of the turbo..... i n=know my 1G in my celica did as do rb26's etc.....

Any other ideas peoples?

The main reason I fit the AFM (hot wire type) after the turbo in a car that was originally NA is due to the temp sensor. Cars like the GTR have a seperate air temp sensor in the inlet manifold. Also, unless you fit a recirculating blow off valve, like most late model factory turboed cars do, you can often get the engine to stall when shutting the throttle, mainly due to the air passing back through the AFM which causes the stall. Not all cars may do this, but I have turboed a few RB30e's and this is typical of their system, and the TB42e's system seems very simmilar.

Nah, have done nothing with it so far...

combination of the house (new kitchen and fencing), my fast car and building a hard lid for my boat have taken up all my time...

i did build a set of rear drawers/platform setup for the back with a double bed in it... but thats all the love the 4x4 has had....

feel free to go ahead with it yourself and let us know how it goes

i have been keeping an eye out for a cheap super charger, but am in no rush yet.
