rear bar fab questions.

hi guys..

me and a few mates played with the bender for the first time on sunday and came up with this for a rear bar on the 40.

imagine it flipped 180 deg and on the rear.. kind of like this..

I was planning of getting some 10mm thick plate on the inside edge for mounting to existing holes in the rear bumper with suitable gussets to add strength. The tube is 32nb (42mm OD) with about 4mm wall thickness.

My first question is.. Would it be possible to integrate a some sort of stub axel(?) in there for a spare wheel carrier or is there just not enough metal there? Could you sleeve some box over where the stub axel goes for more meat for strength? with suitable gussets to the bar that runs under?

I was also thinking of putting the hub on the rear bar so there isnt the spindle sticking up when not in use. would this be better/stronger than having a spindle sticking out? I was hoping I could have one on either side.

2nd question is, if I wanted to put the hayman reese towbar receiver in the middle, what kind of bracing would be required to make it strong enough for towing, recoverys? another 10mm plate on the inside of the rear bumper/crossmember? I would have to cut a hole big enough for the receiver to fit and this might take out the middle 4 bolt holes. (refer to pic)

Here is some of barwork I did on a TJ that will help you out Andrew. I had to intergrate all the barwork together to allow for a roof rack/roof scrub bars.
I built the towbar into the rear bar.

I did my reciever hitch in a similar way to what your think. I Cut it into this C section I used for the bar, at the back of the receiver hitch is a 12mm plate welded to the receiver and uses the four factory bolts to secure it. All up 10 bolts holding the rear bar on, have done numerous recoveries and no issues. Its coming off soon to finish the edges with some 50x75x6mm RHS to suit a rear quarter chop.

ok.. a few more questions..

1) the axle stubs you get from super heap, where do you get the bits to make the outer that rests on the stub? Do you make this if so out of what? I notice on the pics above there are stepped tube and have a cap.

2) If I wanted to get a spindle (as per pic) and weld the inner shaft (1.5"/38.1mm) into some 32NB tube (42.4mm OD) will there be enough strength to support about 200kgs?

If not would the point where the lower bar (as per pic) joins the top bar be enough to support the spindle and the weight on that point?

You can buy hubs that dont have flanges that are perfectly suited for the application. I used one on a bar i designed and made here:
