Hi guys,
After leaking for a little while I decide to investigate... I see this... seems like I'm losing a bit of oil but I'm not sure exactly where it is coming from, Sometimes it smells because it looks like it gets on the muffler... There is no oil towards to front of the car... just this above the rear diff. Heres some pics... tell me what you think.. thanks!

Diff pinion seal? Is it a big job?

Not really but there is a little bit of a knack to it, a diff shop shouldn't charge much at all to whack a new one in. I would be checking your diff oil level its probably getting a bit low now, also check the diff breather isn't blocked.

not really 1/2 hour with the right tools, you may also need a speedy sleave for the pinion depending how badly worn it is. :) :)

If the pinion spacer has collapsed and the flange is loose you may be up for those as well. Also check the spline for wear.

Spoke to a diff guy today and hes trying to sell me a whole new diff center.

He says 9 times outa 10 the bearings are shagged, plus the clutch and for an extra bit of $ he'll just supply me with a whole rebuilt unit fitted... $990

at that price i would fork out the extra for a locker.
is the diff noisy at any speed sounding like a whinning noise

Ok.... I got under the car and pulled on the driveshaft to check for wear to the bearings, I have no up and down or side to side movement but there is a little bit of slop on the shaft if I turn it, Is that normal and does it sound like I can get away with just a new seal etc?

well a seal will cost about $5 not hard to replace if you have a manual read that pretty simple remove shaft, undo nut, tap out seal carefully, knock in new one, put nut on, replace shaft, change oil.

cheap way to start did you say it was noisy at speed if so your bearings are rooted

cost of seal $5.00 plus labor. not hard to do if you know what you are doing.
buy a manual the best investment for any home mechanic and give it a go. movement in a propshaft is normal ie backlash, but movement in uj's is not a good thing and neither is movement in diff pinion bearings. for around 1600 you could have a air locker put in as well with all new bearings and seals. oh plus compressor.

With doing the pinion nut back up only do it up as far as it was when it came off otherwise you may give it to much preload on the pinion bearings and then they will be shaged

Strangely enough.... The diff had plenty of oil in it.... so where the hell is the oil coming from?!

is it diff oil or engine oil. diff oil has got a certain smell but if it engine oil i rekon its your rear main seal in your engine

clean the area first and go for a drive to see if it is your diff pinion, but by the looks of it i reckon it is.
