dose anyone know where i can get shafts for a pto winch made in brisbane?
Advanced Trailer Spares at Coopers plains..
They do all the gear for Thomas PTO's... fit up energex vehicles with PTO's, etc.. they should have everything you need. You will need to give them the length and before you pay make sure the keyhole is the right fit. When they made my custom shaft I had to file the bit off the end of the key to make it fit.

soooooo...... when i told you that ATS are the PTO gurus about a week ago, which bit wasn't clear???

In all seriousness mate, go round to my place and have a look at mine. You will get an idea of how they are made and what bits you will need to adapt/shorten. Have a look at the keyway on the output box, and where it goes onto the winch itself. These are the bits that you won't be able to fab yourself, if the shafts you are getting are too long you will be able cut them short in the middle and resleeve them together. If you find that the shaft is imbalanced as a result, then go and get a correct length one from ATS, but at least you will have tried the cheaper option.

From a phone conversation with ATS a couple of days ago, apparently true pto systems are getting harder and harder to find given that they have been out of production for a while. They are still fitting pto winches with hydraulic drive motors directly on to the winch, and are even now using electric motors. i'm interested in the electric over PTO option actually. could be a pretty strong and fast set up.

i just thought id just shop around a bit first ATS said no more than 480+gst. The winch i got has everything except the shafts i thought he had them but apparently he dosent...... ATS where really helpful, but i have to have different shafts to normal apparently cos of my extractors, but hey what can u do............... and yeah its always a good idea to get 2 or 3 quotes just to make sure

fark. i remember having a bit of a heart attack when they gave me the bill for my shafts, and now i know why
mate, we'll have a crack at home first if you want. surely we can get the bearings and uj's from somewhere, and after that we'll just get some rod milled to accept the keyways.

just make your own shaft the keyways for a thomas winch are easy to make
get some 19mm rod (hardish to find)
get a NEW 1mm angle grinder disc
carefully cut 2 slits into it the corect distance apart for the keyway width
then swap to a 2mm or 2.whatever and carefully gring the center bit away
keep test fitting the keyway till its deep enough and the keyway fits snug
then if you wanna be pedantic get a welder and weld up the ends so there squarer
i just tac welded the keyways to the shaft in mine
i did all mine on my pto shaft cost me 19bux for the rod
1.4m iirc for a standard 4 speed 40 series
get some 19mm rod (hardish to find)

Allied Bearings at rocklea are good for prices, 3/4 bar is 19.05mm and would be what most PTO winches would use for drives. I wold look at 4140 for strength.
I made a replacement shaft for a mates PTO, but it was the winch shaft he broke. I used 1 1/4" 4140, I dont want to be around if he brakes it.

i asked around and it's possible to get a torque limiting slip clutch put in place of the shear pin. Between 100 - 300 bucks, i might be interested in putting one of these in.
does anyone know how to calculate what Nm a shaft should slip at if given the ratio of the worm drive and the dimensions of the drum? I guess you need to work out the rated pull strength of a thomas winch (9000lb) as a Nm measurement at the drum.
Sooo, if the drum is 100mm round, and the winch is rated at 9000lb (4090kg) then the main shaft on the drum would be rated at 409Kgf/m (4090 / .1mtr)
Then if the worm drive to crown gear ratio was 60:1 then the input shaft to the winch would want a rating of 6.81Kgf/m or about 68Nm
Does this sound right?
I suspect that the winch would be good for a hell of a lot more than that

At 960RPM the line speed is 12meters a minute. So at max load it should be good for 12meters a minute
At half load it should be good for 24meters a minute and so on
