Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey guys,

well it seems i'll need to replace my clutch soon...

can anyone recommend one particular brand of heavy duty clutch over another or are they all much the same?

its for a 3b with 5spd h55F gearbox.

I know there are terrain tamers, safarai, exide(sp) all do heavy duty clutches but whats best?

i have plans to turbo the 3b at a later date so thats probably as much abuse its likely to get. Oh and I'm not one for silly driving (dropping clutch, etc).

hi shorty_f0rty when doing up my hj47 with the same transmision i chose a safari tuff clutch cant remember the price however the clutch has a much higher clamp pressure, a while back i did my clutch on my rocky when having the gearbox rebuilt and put in a pbr cluch kit cheap i know however the clutch shudders badly when loaded up, so would stay away from them.

i run a exedy stage 2 heavy duty clutch, i origionally tried a different brand and it lasted about 12months.

Heaps better quality in the exedy.

exedy never had a problem with them have herd some bad stories about the pbr ones?

I run a ceramic 5 finger Excedy clutch plate (has spring loaded centre) & Excedy pressure plate that has been tweaked to have more clamping pressure. It is fantastic and locks up unreal but I can't slip the pedal much at all and it's heavy.
Over the past 6 years I have destroyed 5 clutches & 3 pressure plates, I have tried PBR, Hayes & standard Excedy set ups.

maaan.. hasn't anyone used some of the other brands? Safari or Terrain tamer?

So with the heavy duty clutch its harder to slip the clutch? I only find myself doing this on really slow techincal stuff where idling in 4low 1st is a little too fast..

I'm very happy with my 4terrain (Clutch Industries).

Compared to the previous safari - Better pedal feel, better take-up, more controllable, never slipped when i don't want it to. Got mine from Bursons, who were keen to beat any other comparable price.

Also comes in a really cool wooden crate

Daikin/Exedy make Safari Tuff. Never had a come back with them, had a few pbr's come back with problems before swtching to Exedy. As Dogbreath says, the CI 4Terrain gets a pretty good wrap too but I havent used them. Crate looks cool too.

I run this same clutch and have found it pretty good. I was a bit worried when I first drove the car after I changed the clutch cause it had a lot lighter pedal than the previous clutch. But I haven't had it slip at all.

safari tuff here and love it handles stock gearing 25's and a turbo nicely

i probabally would have gone a 4terrain but there customer service SUX and every email to them took 4 days to get a reply even to find a nearby stockist


theres a seller on ebay with HEAPS of safari tuff clutches dirt cheap like $200 under retail

My Exody sports tuff is beginning to shudder and slip after 6 months, time will tell how much longer it lasts, but if they make a tougher clutch than the sports tuff (probably do) then I would recommend going that way if you go Exody.

well.. decided to go with the 4terrain clutch.. it gets fitted on monday..
did a bit of reading and i didn't find any bad reports on these..

i'll update this thread after the weekends wheeling and report on how it feels.
