60series slowely rusting away?

Hey...

What do guys do with their 60series that is really starting to bubble around the roof sills and pretty bad A-Pillers.

It still runs well for a motor thats done almost 410,000kms and is my Daily Driver also, but would be looking at getting probably a shorty GQ in the near future and would be looking at selling the cruiser or just cutting up.

Just wondering what those with a bit more imagination out there would do?

I currently have a 60 with rust starting in the roof, it's been owned by my dad since new, 243,000 Km's

This is probably not a feasible option for you, but i purchased a new roof from Toyota and will be getting it fitted when all the other rust is removed.

In your case, i would consider a Ute Chop if the front section of the roof is good ? or possibly a convertible ?

Other than that, parting it out is probably the best option.

You could always just bog it up, i had a mate who no joke must have used 10kgs of bog in his torana.

Well if you decide to part with the 60 give me a pm, im looking for a cheap 4wd for fun in the bush.

cheers jason

BTW, I have bad rust in the passenger side A pillar. I don't want to look at it to much in case it's 'really' serious.

I wasn't actually aware they are still available!!!! I took a profile of my gutter/rolled edge of the roof and got some made up by my local sheet metal place. They done an awesomw job and all I had to do was cut the old rusted part out, clean it up and weld in the new sections.

Was pretty easy, just a bit time consuming & fiddly. Looks a treat now but will not even be noticable once I respray it(apart from where you can see my dints in the roof from walking all over it drunk!!! )

i inquired about it about 3 years ago and it was going to cost $1100 back then for a roof panel. THat was through a mate who worked in spare parts too.

I'D like to find out how much to my 60 roof is going the same way i was going to get the whole roof cut off and another one welded back on until they told me how much now i've been looking for another body to replace it and they are hard to find everyone i've looked at is the same rusted out bad and i dont want to get rid of it because the running gear is good :x

Haha.. I'm 19.. i don't drink, don't smoke.. i just love my 60.. i work hard to save for the things i want and the roof was one of them, i almost have enough to get the entire car restored / rustproofed now.

The roof was expensive.. i won't deny that.. I managed to get the Last one in the Country (Purchased December 2007), I'm sure if you wanted one you could get one Ex. Japan but that would be very expensive!!! Check out how big the box is!!!

All i can say is fix it while you still can mate, would be a shame to see your truck become Rusty :(

I got a good price on the roof thanks to a mate at the local Toyota :) It's not cheap though! (I don't want to reveal the price because it is a fair bit.

As i said above i got the last one that was in Australia according to my friend at Toyota.

Great idea with getting the gutter / rolled edge remade.. have you got any pics of the work you did and under the roof ?

The reason i purchased the entire roof was because i just don't want the rust to come back, and i think if i do the whole panel and can fix all the other spots the chances of it coming back anytime soon are slim to none.

Wow.. you most definitely should have taken that!

Such a shame mate, i hope you can find a shell worthy of your running gear.

Thanks for the replies..

LOL! Landcruiser love really is a religion!

Hey Dan, I'm going to be up your way mid August - staying at Kellyville, visiting Hornsby a bit. Time is a bit of a premium as we have to show the new Bub to all the rellies, but might have time for a quick catch up....

Hey Dan

My god sounds like your my twin :P !!! Im 19, dont drink, dont smoke and spend all my money on my truck, First truck being a HJ61 Sahara. My very first car trip when i was 3 days old was in a 60 series and to this day still my favorite shaped 4b. Unfortunetly i rebelled from the religion at the end of last year and bought an 80 series. I knew i was going to regret it, But such is life!

Was such a nice 60 ..

GO THE 60'S
Original in terms of the way the body looks, thinking about doing it the Original "Smurf" Blue.

It will be similar to the ARB Cruiser in terms of the things they changed / modified but will also include some other things.

Dan

Highwaychook:

I'd rather not :) All i know is i got the best price i could for it and now i have it so :)

i went from a 60 to an 80. the 60 is definitely a better vehicle. cheaper for parts, much more reliable. As for the roof? cut it off and have a safari top. get a canvas roof made up for the rain (or drill some big holes in the floor)

My Sahara had rust around the roof and a few other areas. (a bodgy passenger rear quarter fix that must have had a kilo of bog in it!!) No one up here in Cairns wanted to fix it except for a bloke that was full of booze at 11am in the morning.... thought I would steer clear of that one!!!

I ended up doing it myself, cut all the rust out and got replacement sections from my mate at a wrecking yard. Some parts I had to make up myself, but it all came together pretty good. I rust prepped and fish oiled the hell out of it, no sign at the moment but I only did it a year ago....

will post some pics when I can remember how to load photos on to my website......

Ok, got on to my ISP and have up loaded some photos of my rust repair. Will try and get some more pics on in a new thread of the rebuild, putting in a cable locker front end, axle widening kit, rebuild on the 12-HT, discs on the rear......

Image

Believe it or not, most of this was on the outside, minimal rust on the inside...

Image

I got parts from the wreckers, and after cutting all the rust out, welded new sections in that had been treated with rust convertor. (I did inside the roof panel also with rust convertor)

Image

I used rust convertor on my welds, so it got into the seams

Image

Paint job is average, and colour match is not perfect, but no more rust
