Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Anyone have any tips for fitting these?

If it's like mine, use large Aluminium rivets, and when you drill the roof insert a fish paste type product (like fish oil but with the consistency of grease) in the drilled holes. The more rivets the better, without riveting the whole roof of course.

Just wondering. On the hilux you have a plastic seal along the roof. Is the tracks for the racks supposed to be rivetted into this groove or separate?

Judging by this photo it is install just inside of the seal.

I would go just inside, the black strips are usually a seam line or to cover a structural part of the vehicle and usually have nothing to do with fitting roof racks.

name one other brand/type/style of roof rack for a non-gutter hilux that have a load rating of more than 100kgs?

track mounts are the strongest rack available for non guttered vehicles.
and when fitted correctly(not by you),they fit and work really well.

2005 and on (current shape),the tracks go in the channel after the rubber strip has been removed.
97-05 usually go just inside the strip.

if fitting yourself make sure you use a drill-stop.and put a small amount of silicone in and around each hole to stop water leaks.

Have drilled the holes for one side and put some cold gal on them. Will fish oil it, silicone it and pop rivet it up. Then on the the next side...

Have you used these racks in outback situations?
I have.
Total weight including rack less than 70Kgs.
Old Ghan Railway line.
3 hours of corrugations = 1 cracked roof.

I would never use these on a 4WD that is likely to be used in these conditions.

I was making a non personal comment with regard to the fitting style of the rack, many people dont realise that there are often non intrusive racks available for their gutterless cars.

Are you seriously that offended that someone might have a preferance over a product that arb stocks that you have to go personal?

Next time try making a non personal comment - and yes that means you can still point out your opinions.

I would go non intrusive systems anyday, danos hadnt noted that he needed 100kg plus - if thats his only option then there is no choice, however I still wouldnt like it.

IM not 100% sure but I believe the Thule Xsporter system (only suitable for styleside utes, no canopy etc) to suit the hilux will carry 200kg. I quote ' No drilling required'

I never said Rhino dont fit or work well, I merely pointed out that there are other options which dont involve damaging the car.

I dont like Rhino systems like this as the holes drilled put load on a small area of thin roof and can pull out / crack / wear, but if its the only option for a give set of needs then fair enough.

In my opinion if Rhino want to make a good heavy duty rack they should look to more involved systems which dont short cut and drill a holes in the roof. I say this because alot of their systems are very innovative and impressive- drilling into a roof is not.



To Danos, good luck fitting your racks mate, I hope the work out well. Sorry your question has become a mud slinger.

OH and be careful if *R* has given advice on how to fit it yourself- that doesnt mean they will offer any warrenty if something goes wrong. and roofs wouldnt be cheap to fix.

But you should be ok Rhino will be good to deal with in the unlikely event it goes pear shaped they are a good company.
