Questions about Patrol petrol/auto's

We have been looking at the idea of getting a early to mid 90's GQ 7 seater Patrol as a more comfortable vehicle for the family to get around in, since we can't all fit into the falcon and the girls don't like getting into my dusty ride. Either a carby or efi on gas, auto ( the opposition party is insisting on an auto) . A Ti model maybe.

What sort of fuel consumption would i expect to get out of a tank of petrol and also from a tank of gas from one of these ?.

And also what about the auto's?. Are they strong enough to handle hard conditions or are they a weak link and require some beefing up ?.

The plan would be to turn it into a more capable offroad/ family camper type getaway vehicle with a locker or 2, winch, fridge etc, and then still get the kids to school.

I've only ever had diesel manuals so unsure of what goes on in the world of petrol auto's.

Thanks for any feed back.

ive recently bought a 96 ST 4.2 EFI auto and i have a 140l longrange tank and drove from Gladstone to sunshine coast ( 500km trip one way) and got down there with just over half a tank left sitting on 110km/h - 120km/h

Probably looking between 18-22L/100km on petrol driving easy, maybe 25L/100km on gas. Most conversions replace the main tank with the gas tank and they put in a smaller sub tank for petrol.

No probs with the autos, a decent trans cooler would be a good investment but in general they are pretty good.

What nabstud said. I have a 90 carby'd 4.2 auto petrol/gas. i get about 16-18l/100 km and about 20-24l/100 km gas. Most of my driving is an even mixture of highway, traffic and off-road.

Also i am very happy with the auto. it is my first auto and is quite good.

It is the same auto that I'm using but I've got a different valve body. Mine is handling 280rwkw and isn't having any dramas so it is strong enough if you look after it. Regular servicing, aftermarket trans cooler and bypass the factory cooler and it will last really well.

Do you mean bypass the tiny cooler or the in-radiator cooler? Is it necessary to have the oil run through the radiator?

Hey mate,

I had a 89 petrol/gas (carby) manual gq which was stolen - and i replaced it with a 94 (efi) auto. I love my auto - so much better driving to and from work and towing my boat. haven't done any offroad with it yet so cant comment on that.

As for fuel - 17-19 i did a best of 16l per 100km once.

just put it on gas - 23.5l per 100km on the last tank.....

looks like everyone is pretty similar

Cheers
Stew

Bypass the cooler in the radiator. This is responsible for most meltdowns as it gets blocked as the torque convertor linings wear.
In really cold weather you need it to warn the trans fluid but the reality is Oz and most on NZ don't need to worry about that.
As an idea I have 2 very large coolers on mine and it hardly even gets above 80%. Within reason the cooler they run the better. Obviously to cold is bad too.
