hey all. i was wondering wat the best size exhaust for a standard 1.6 vit engine efi. i was thinkin 2 inch with extractors. but i dont want it to sound like a fart. i was hoping for a chunky sound. also i was lookin at stainless. just so it doesnt rust. and does anyone hav videos online i could view to see wat there systems sound like on there 1.6's. that would be great.

2inch is a good size for a stock motor. Adjust the volume and sound somewhat with what type of muffler you use (straight through, turbo etc).

yeah go 2" pipe - i've spoken to a number of places who all agree that thats about the limit for a 1.6 no matter what mods you're running (short of turbo/charger). make sure the cat and muffler are suited to it too.
Mines currently 1.6 8v with Weber, extractors to 2" cat and 2" pipe to the back. with a droopy exhaust tip to get the fumes out of the cab. Its very quiet - infact you can hear the engine more than the exhaust - which i think is great - i hate droney exhausts!!

I had a "hi flow blah blah" 2" exhaust and extractors with high flow muffler on one of my zuks. The thing sounded great at idle and low to mid revs but if I took it on the high way Id have to use ear plugs (and still arrive with a headache and dissorientated from the loud drone)
I went to 1 3/4 with a quieter muffler and didnt notice a loss of power but was much quieter.
This was on a 1.3 but now have a 1.6 and seems to go good.
I have no facts to back this up but I stopped buying ear plugs and can listen to the radio now, and like alien said the induction of the weber is way louder than the exhuast now.
The loud burble sounds good but gets anoying and gets you the wrong attention....
Just my thoughts

Mine is kinda like NIK described but I don't mind it lol.
This is my swift GTi motor hitting about 7500RPM with genie headers (sierra ones with GTi flange welded on), 2 inch high flow cat, and 2 inch straight through muffler. And yes I know the video is sideways it how my phone sits in the holder on my dash

good to see everyone that has invested in police attention beacons, it makes so much sense to get them concentrating on the exhaust that every other niggly thing will go unchecked.
On a more serious note (ok ok, another pun) i'm pretty certain that most of those vids will crack the 94db moped noise restriction, and i vaguely remember cars being the like over 90db and you can get defected
It might e an idea to get one or two resonator/glasspack/hotdog whatever-they-are-called into the system before it hits the 'end zone' muffler.
or you could try an upscaled version of this

not pickin', but i would suggest that stainless is going to be an expesive setup for something that will quote possibly end up damaged on rocks etc...
you might consider just "mild steel" as a better option - more repairable etc... yes it will rust over time, but ask yourself if it will still be there by the time it gets rusty.

Mines not a daily driver so not too concerned but i am looking at putting a resi under there before the muffler.
its not too bad. have driven past many coppers on hwy and none have batted an eyelid. if i nail it then yes it is louder.
Anyone know how they measure it? a certain revs or speed?

ha ha that sounds sick grpabt1. hope mine sounds like that whe the motor is in.

at the moment im running a 2.5 inch system, hot dog and big ass muffler,, too loude and SOUNDS LIKE SHIT!! yes it is big, i know but it was done from previous owner and was running a 1.6 vit + turbo,
now im running a standard 1.6.. going to go down to 2 inch system with a hot dog and muffler which should quiten it down alot..
iv been advised if i wanted to go really quiet to go 2 mufflers but then it would lower the flow..

don't know for certain but i imagine full throttle at 60kms per hour would be the safest
dick smith electronics have an analogue sound meter for about $50 and if you really careful with it and the packaging you can return it as a change of mind for refund within 14 days

The cops put a DB meter about 1M from your exhaust tip and make you hold revs at about 3500RPM I think (which is difficult to do on some cars). It's the biggest bullshit revenue raising law in a long time. My commodore is louder than the zook but I have no need to rev it above 2000RPM at any legal speed so how do they justify 3500rpm?
And up here we seem to get treated ok by the cops so long as we don't make fools of ourselves on the road and hang out at the local hot spots.
If you're seriously worried you can get valves to install in the exhaust to make it quieter at the touch of a button.

3500-4000 is the standard for measuring db's. i once had a large muffler and a working cat and topped 124 db,s [was recorded.] now i like my cars quiet, being loud is for wives.

Yeah but can you tell me how to get my worked V8 down below 100 DB without affecting performance?

if its a cast iron dinosour job the simple fix is replacing it with a tojo v8.

Bear in mind that the only way these guys are measuring noise is at no load. Most cars are MUCH louder under load than at no load, and when "blipped"
I don't think it's really that hard to make a car legal at no load, but it might still have a lovely note under high load.
extractors and a 2" system , a cat, a triple flow muffler, a hot dog right near the tailpipe and and 2.5" tailpipe gave a really nice deep sound but no nasty resonance and a nice quiet cruise/no load on the last 1.6 car a did an exhaust on. This hasn't been tested but I'm sure it's legal.
My 660 runs 2.25" with a commodore cat and a triple flow muffler and I'm sure it's legal too, but might be close. It does make a bit of noise on boost. (but wouldn't when free revved under no load) Turbos definitely make cars quiet. This exhaust setup would be ear splitting on a 1.3/1.6.
I did a G13BB with extractors - all 2," cat, 15" hotdog, triple flow muffler, 12" hotdog and 2.5" tailpipe. Its soooooooo quiet the injectors ticking make more noise than the exhaust at idle. IMHO it's actually a bit too quiet - It's hard to hear what the motor's doing, even with the doors off. This car was noise tested for engineering and was well under the limit.
Just some idea of different setups.
Steve.

failed my engineer inspection last friday for the exhaust being to loud. 92.8db at 4200rpm measured at the exhaust tip. Apparently the test is done at 3/4 of peak HP RPM (peak being 5600rpm in a 1.6L according to the engineer) and the limit is 90db. Im only running extractors, 1 3/4" pipe, std 1.3L cat and muffler

what does a hotdog / resi do?
will effect the note or the noise more?

Hot dogs really just tune note and remove resonances. I wouldn't make any sort of claim they reduce overall noise. They definitely smooth it out.

nic that exhaust sounds sweet. howed you go fittin the extractors between the chassis and block. did it touch at all cause the stock manifold is very close.

it does sound nice, esp on song in the sand.
wilcat 112 i think are the ones i got. i cut about 10 square out of the engine mount and for safety and they have been fine in there.
i may think off another centre-centre muffler under there too one day

o ok cool. as long as i dont hav to notch the chassis lol. dont like the idea of it snappin on me. also have u got any pics that show the cut and how they fit?
thanks.

i had an 87 sierra hard top with:
webber, extractors 2 inch straight through ( with no mufflers ) and a cannon on the back..
my advice dont do it lol my head is still ringing

i have never installed an exhaust but have researched it a bit and a good resonator is supposed to much like a good catalytic converter the difference in power should be so minimal it would be laughable. A full blown racer might exploit it and put up with the noise but street vehicles should be more concerned with the drivability.
I personally have been planning to install a powdercoated mild steel one piece mandrel bent 1 3/4 with a high flow cat and a 'rebuilt stock' muffler. If i can achieve stock noise i'd be happy (or lower i'd be in heaven)
Autospeed has a few articles on exhausts, they suggest going up half an inch instead of mandrel bends, cheaper and in most cases the same result.
The reason i picked 1 3/4 is the stock cast gti exhaust manifold and cultus Gti-A have a 1 3/4 outlet into the cat. (so do carby 1.6l i haven't cut a sierra one to find out internal diameter) Considering the power figures and the higher operating rpm it seemed like a good choice.

my sierra with g13bb fitted runs standard headers, 1 3/4 pipe into commodore cat, hotdog, then muffler, no 'tip' as such, and it is nice and quite on highway and normal driving but if i give it a squirt sounds very nice, but would be easily under the limit.
What gets me is how the harleys dont get pinged....

Rear storage box going in last
Rear side speaker panels (1x 8" sub,1x6" midrange each side) (splits in front) (new marine carpet going in also)
Rear cargo barrier with new wood panel for mounting bits (bolted on with spacer plates.
Dummying up where things are going to go on the back of the barrier. relays for a few acc's are going on the left or right of amp. There will be a power outlet going in the right hand panel. i am cutting a window in the barrier to put hand through for the cb's (about 4ich or so slit i think or flap)

found a pic. is that the notch on the corner?
