just wondering if it is of any advantage to run an extra alternator just to charge the caravan batteries. what i am thinking of is just have a 100amp alternator hocked up to the van batteries direct through a 25mm/squ cable. when not using the van the alternator could be hooked up to the axillary under the battery under the bonnet. this is on a 2000 gu 4.2 td.
cheers shane.

It is certainly possible but it would cost quite a bit. In both materials (alt, brackets, cables, regulator, clamps, clips etc) and extra fuel to run the extra alt.
I think I'd be looking at a few solar panels on the roof of the van instead.
If that isn't enough then you could run a small generator to recharge the batteries. The advantage of solar is the batteries will be charged ALL the time wether you are using the van or not so they should last longer.
Small gensets are ridiculously cheap now... Bunnings have several different sizes for under $500.
