Another GQ/GU Question. Which Realilabilty??

Ive just spent 2 hours reading about the GQ/GU Motor options and Reliability.

Embarisingly Ive got a Discovery at the moment, but the one thing i like about it is the Feul economy, I get 900klms out of a 90L tank of deisel.

I have always liked Nissans and want to go back to one. Loved my GQ 4.2 Desiel that I had 6 years ago but had to sell it at the time due to $$$.

The GQ's 4.2 both Desiel and Petrol/Gas seem to be good but I read that the Petrol motor has had a head cracking problem. I dont want to go back to a GQ as Id like to get something with lower Ks this time (Pref well under 200k, mid/low 100s better).

Cant afford a good 4.2td (although it would be awesome), early 3.0 seem like something to avoid with relaibilty, 2.8TD might be OK with reliabilty and I really dont mind that much if they are slow (im getting out of a dam 2.5TDI Disco for christ sake!) not sure if they leak much or have other worrys??
BUT
Im thinking I might get a 4.5 on Gas. They seem to have very little problems that I can find, good on gas if you dont thrash them, plenty of toorak tractors around and seem to be popping up well under 20k. The only worry would be you dont get over about 400ks to a 90L tank as far as I can find. Desiel seems to be gaining speed towards $2 per L, not sure if gas will go to 1$???

GU QUESTIONS??
Is there an offroad problem with any Bullbar and Airbags?? EG bump a tree lightly and have two black eyes? Or do only some have Airbags?
Is the ABS a problem?? I heard I think you can take out an fuse and your back to old school brakes??
Do the Barn doors drop like GQ's?
Any worrys with 4.5's and River crossings?

This car will be used by the boss when she carrys the kids to Footy Training etc and for me to play on the weekends time permitting.
Not looking for comps etc, will just put some 2in, 33's and a rear locker in.

Im sure there is other things I will come up with to ask.

You will have to hit something hard to pop an airbag. How hard? Well you'll probably bend or break something.

i might have made this up but i think i read that some 4wd airbags disengage when in low range. probably not a patrol though..

airbags only go off after about 30kph. any slower than that and it wont go off.

I had a 4.5 GU on gas. I hit a roo (about 1m tall) at about 70-80kph and it bent the alloy bar, no airbag. You have to hit something very hard to make the airbag go off. Mine was a 98 model and didn't have ABS, I think it was only standard on the Ti but optional on the other models.

I had 3" lift, 33's and the missus liked to drive it. It was auto. I didn't have any problems in 35,000km. The only probs were caused by mud in the starter motor. I played in mud heaps but never did any deep crossings. My doors were OK, the bigger door started to get harder to open.

Just don't expect it to be a powerhouse. Mine was a bit of a slug.

ABS was standard on Ti's in the days of GU series 1.

However you could get ABS in the "saftey pack" which was passenger airbag and of course ABS. I think this was introduced for the GUII in 2000, but could have arrived earlier.

Yes ABS can be disabled when offroad by pulling the ABS fuse. They will function as normal (pathetic) patrol brakes.

Arbags too can be disabled by removing various things but I'm definately not going to post up how as I'm very certain it won't be a problem for a non comp driven vehicle.

Thanks for the Airbags and ABS News, sounds like its no real practicl problem

I still could be swayed into getting a GQ but Im thinking that GU doors, seals, and generally being a newer car will be just far nicer car to have, use and drive.

Nabstub sounds like the set up Im thinking of. I hate mud, it kills everything I avoid it as much as I can so shouldnt have a problem.

Did you have any problems with being gas and not having enough klms per tank?? EG having to drive into town to get gas all the time when a deisel GU with duel tanks would last the whole weekend

Anyone any thoughts on the 2.8TD??

Does a 35in tyer fit on the rear GU barn door?

Yeah, range was pretty crappy. Best I got (and only a couple of times) was 550km from 75L gas and 30L petrol. Generally I get about 300km from 80L gas and 130km from 30L petrol. You can get a 80L sun tank instead of the standard 35L, a mate has this and on a country run gets about 750km from both tanks.

Bear in mind, if you're doing some decent offroading or sand driving it can almost double the consumption! I did the Border Track last year and averaged 31L/100km! (gas was 35L/100km) I wasn't shy on the accelerator though. That was just over 410km and I needed a 20L jerry to make it back to the servo! That was the only time I needed it though. I usually just fill both tanks as close to where I'm going off road and haven't had any probs.

A 35 will fit on the back door but you need to make a simple spacer. A search on here should show you how. It won't help the sagging door though!

thanks mate, Im planning on only doing VIC/NSW trips in this one so shoud be Ok from what you say.

I found some good threads about the 35's and the reardoor mount, should be able to make something up.

Anyone got any comments about the 2.8Td against the 4.5lpg??

mate most people bag out the 2.8 but their not too bad slow yeah but dam good on fuel and if you want more power put it on gas....

get a Ti with the rear locker already, then you can put a front locker in instead.
2-3" will fit 35s also

I JUST TRADED MY GQ 4.2 DUALFUEL IN ON A 2.8 GU DIESEL AND ITS THE BEST THING IVE DONE NOT AS GOOD IN THE POWER RANGE BUT BETTER ON FUEL JUST GOT BACK FROM MELB YESTY AND USED 3/4 TANK ALBURY TO MELB AND BACK IM SMILING

yeah Ived looked at Ti's and they are starting to pop up for around the 20k mark with low to mid 100ks on them.

I guess as in any deisel as long as its been cared for it should be ok, and sounds like they didnt have the Handgrenade problem!

What size tank is in the 2.8?? Smaller diffs and gearbox in them aswell isnt there??

Ive found people talking in threads about having problems with the 2.8's and 3.0ls but I cant find one thread in the bible talking about problems with the 4.5??

Are they that good?

yeh they have the smaller drivetrain but its a patrol, its not a yota so your less likely to break stuff :lol:

i wouldnt say they are that good, but at the same time i wouldnt say they are that bad either....

i have one,
it has plenty of power, 145kw i think? (more than enough to embarass the average 4 or 6 at the traffic light grand prix :cool: :lol: )
they are the right price,

theres good and bad when deciding between the diesel and petrol option...
cost of servicing (oils/frequency of changes/ price difference etc...) and the cost of diesel versus petrol etc....

it all depends on what exactly you want from the vehicle

Unless you buy a 3.0L you won't get a chance of seeing over 800km from a GU and its standard tanks if you like driving at the speed limit.

Cruise at 80km/hr and it'll be a different matter.

Even in a 2.8TD???

I would have thought that a 95L tank of diesel would get around 900klm at least??

The clutch seems to be a worry with the 2.8??

ive done 885ks on my main tank so far and still have over a 1/4 of a tank left so not doin to bad also thats all highway to so im happy and my old girls done 320thousand ks on the clock injectors just been done ,clutch id dont no, all good so far touch wood, and she stock as a rock.so far lol cheers skinna

no for some reason it drops real quick from a 1/4 to empty id say roughly 950 if im lucky but easy with the sub tank

How much does a 2.8 weigh?? Im guessing that a 4.5 would be simlar?

id say a 2.8 would be slightly less

The TB45 is a very heavy lump of iron, they are incrediably durable in stock form and very thirsty stock or modified ... look at 18 to 20l per 100K's on road and 45L plus per 100 offroad ( worst I ever did was over 60L per 100 .. in a very very fully laden vehcile on dry sand racing the tide :oops: still never overheated and pulled the load quite well)
