Hello people
I have just put a s/h set of BFG muddies 32x11.5x15 on the Mav.
They are very noisy and below about 30kp/h there is like a shutter- similar to going over a catlle grate.
Is this normal behaviour for these tyres?
I had a feroza with maxxis buckshots on it before hand and they were noisy but no shuttering.
Are there any quiet mud tyres out there, maybe something a little more aggresive than all terrains but not to extreme like the BFG's.
Or should I just stick to an all terrain
What are your recommendations?

I have had 3 sets of BFG Muds. When they are new they are nice and quite, but the more they wear down the noisier they get. I still think they are a good all round tyre though, because they handle well on the road and provide pretty good traction in the bush, while wearing well. Definately not as loud as some Mud Terrains with similar tread pattern.
I only have one set of tyres. I get into the bush on most weekends and these are a good compromise between a daily driver and a weekend warrior.

A little bit. Really only when pulling up to a complete stop like at traffic lights. It's just a feeling of the chunky tread pattern through the steering wheel.

When i went to buy my new Patrol (GQ isn't new buy hay after you roll one, its new) i drive a GQ with a set of 32inch Extreme Trekker 2 tyres and at 40K's you can't hear yourself thing at all, they are so loud, its ridiculous,
I have tried BFG Muddies and Wrangler MTR's and the BFG's are quieter, but compared to the Wranglers in the bush, i would rather have them than BFG's, Wrangler's are softer and climb rocks better.

I have cooper discoverer s/t - 285/75/16
and they are heaps noisier than my old hankook a/t (last patrol)
and heaps noisier than the tyres i took off this patrol (but they were simex H/T so that is to be expected lol)
i get that same shuddering too - thought there was something wrong at first.
I thought the S/T were just an agressive all terrain though... anyone know about these?

i had Khumo MT's on a hilux (same pattern as BFG's but a slightly harder compound) these were a great tyre for on road, very little noise comparitivly to any other MT/aggressive tyres i've run... slipery in the wet though.
I now have MTR's on a patrol wagon as dialy drivers - LOVE them. good manners on road, minimal noise (no more than the Khumo MT or BFG's) and not too bad offroad either.
However - they are simply not in the same league as Simex ET's. Run these on mechanicaly beadlocked rims 35" with 300 grams of ball bearing in each corner to try and balance them for speeds above 40km/h. Offroad only. Road noise is ridiculious - when you come to a stop if sounds like the engine has stopped. not to mention the ball bearing sprinkling down over the steel rim, sound like all your whel bearing just fell out on the road - you sure get a few looks! They also shudder all over the place and give wicked seering shimmy but absolutly sh1t on any other tyre I've ever driven off road! especially at 10-12 psi

I have rotated the tyres today and it has fixed them. Having mud terrains I expect to have some noise. But when they were first fitted below 30kp/h everything in the car would rattle and vibrate.
But as said I have now rotated them and all seems much better

MT NOISE
There is realy only one solution to this and i have done it in the past,
expensive but long lasting and that is to have 2 sets of tyers and wheels
if you drive on road a lot,
why destroy good muddies or what ever you use just driving on the tar ,
i used to run 32 bfg at`s on road or for weekend picnik type off roading but if i knew things were gonna get serious i`d put the 32 inch swampers on , tsl radials which were suprisingly well mannerd on the road and sometimes we drove 200 k`s or more to get to our playground but off road they were awsom, just had to remind myself while driving on road with them that there was not a cesna plane flying over my head ( pretty loud but music to my ears)
