Engine delema

Post by hophoar »

I'm running a 3.8 VP motor in my 4Runner and going to work last Friday it started to sound real tappety, I pulled the rocker cover today and found a loose rocker on No.5 exhaust port. I figured it was just the hydrolics on the lifter until I pulled it out and found that the roller had self distructed.
Now my problem is wether I should just replace the lifter or wether I should go to all the trouble of pulling the cam, which would mean pulling the engine out. I can't feel the cam lobe so I don't know how bad it is, you can see it but that doesn't help.

Can you rest something on the cam to act as a follower, then turn the engine over to get a feel for the cam surface?

Pulling the engine to get the cam out sounds suckful - I like my OHC Sigma :D
