I believe it is an RF noise filter on the tacho line. I dont have the service manual here to confirm, but I 'think' that it simply contains a resistor with a capacitor to ground.
If you unplug it, I am fairly sure that the tacho will stop working.
Sorry I cant be 100% sure, I dont have the info here in front of me, but its a start!

Yep. All the work is in driving beyond the first layer. After that, it gets easier.
By the 4th layer, all you need is a red and blue ballpoint pen in your shirt pocket.

Actually one of those 4 in one pens gets you through from the third to 6th layer ... after that .. things get a bit weird unless you are running a HHO kit.
