Just wondering about the RB30 gearboxs
I've been told many times that they are a weak box. but nobody has really told me which bit.
Is it something that can be upgraded during a rebuild, or it is just the whole design of it?
If it is something that can be upgraded during a rebuild, would you just end up using parts off a commonwhore gearbox which a longer rear shaft?

My mate has a rb30 Turbo, has done about 30-40 tho hard k's and only replaced the box cause it had a bearing niose in 5th gear. As the previous owner towed a big boat in 5th (pre-turbo install). So I'm unsure as to how weak these boxes are his car has about 170rwkw.
I was sure so many times it would go bang after watching him do his stunts but it just kept going.

well then Nutter
again you have offered me some of the best info i've gotten so far mate. That link you sent thru is great man. I'm a little more confident now that the gearbox wont fall apart on me, as long as its looked after.
If the Z31's are getting 600+hp then surely it can handle 450-500 in a SWB.
Again thanks for the help mate.
Cant wait to get this baby started.

Like i said in the other thread there actually quite tough, mine took hundreds (no exaggeration) of launches and no probs with breaking first. It also get worked very hard off road and not a complaint. I know the patrol in brissy thats making 550-600 at the rears breaks 3rd like nothing but thats hardly unexpected.

My view is that they have been called weak only because they are noticeably smaller than the box behind the 4.2's which is probably bigger than it needs to be, but thats not a complaint........
