sierra choke - is there somthing missing? (pic)

hi all, i have searched about my seirra stalling straight after it starts - found the "dying at idle" thread to be very helpful and put the advice to work and it didnt really change anything...

so i am wondering how the choke is supposed to work because in a few threads i read that its supposed to be closed? when engine is cold and open up as it warms up?? is that correct???

if soo the choke dont close at all!!!! the lever that the choke is connected to moves very freely like its missing something??? a spring maybe? im not sure but it doesnt seem right...

if you look in the pic theres the throttle bracket, just behind you can see the bracket with the 2 small holes in it and below that is the other little bracket thats connected to the choke assembly - it moves up and down but seems like it has no purpose as it doesnt do anything?? choke just stays open....




i thought there might be a spring missing????

righto i just went and started the sierra, i manually controlled the choke as the engine was running and when i held it nearly closed the engine ran fine - no stalling nothing, but as soon as i opened it up all the way i could hear the revs go up a bit - im assuming because more air had just been let in but it then stalled pretty much straight away????

im am assuming my choke has quit its job???

is your engine cold? idea is the choke closes off air intake which = richer fuel/air mixture. Easier for you car to run when its cold, then the choke is slowly opened as the engine warms up. if you just reef it open when the car is cold without any revs it'll just stall.

my choke is missing. its a pita. if i havent started it in a few days i have to pull the top off the carb and put my hand on top of it while some one else starts it for me to get it goin

yep when the engine was cold the choke was wide open!!! doesnt move at all just stays open whether the engine is hot or cold

so the choke is stuffed??? can it be fixed or should i just replace it?

The choke works by expanding the wax in the cylinder on the side of the carby when the water from the engine heats it up.
If the choke isn't working the piston could be seized or the water hoses are blocked or the wax has leaked out.
All of which are fixable.
You have recently had the cooling system empty doing a water pump and i's possible there is an air pocket trapped in the carby.
To remove the air pocket you can take one of the little coolant hoses off the carb while engine is running and bleed the air out.
Then do the other hose.
Should fix it!!
If you want to convert to a manual choke with a cable to the dash, you can fit a Corolla 3-4-5K carby.
