how many mufflers needed for 3" exhaust

Hi Guys

Im interested to hear from people who have run 3" exhausts on turbo diesels. I have an 80series turbo diesel and am looking at running a 3" mandrel bend system, I am looking at using a 4" dump pipe as far as the transfer case (about 1 metre from turbo) then 3" through to the back. this will give a very straight exhaust path with no bends over 45 deg from dump pipe back.
just not sure how many mufflers to go with.
I have read that people are running 3" systems unmuffled on turbo diesels.

Anyone done this for a daily driver?
How many mufflers and what kind are people running?

I dont want my cruiser to sound like it has a broken manifold.

I want to keep it as free flowing as possible but want to be able to quieten it down a bit too.

cheers

you will need 23 mufflers with no less that 17mm between each in the system

Ok cheers.

now I just need to find mandrel bends that are less than 17mm long

i have a GU 4.2 Turbo diesel. 3 inch Mandrel bend and dump pipe of the turbo.
1 muffler very quiet, even thinking of taking out the muffler.
the turbo becomes a muffler for the exhuast, dosen`t sound as bad is you would think.

Grant.

G'day. I have a 1HDT 80 with a 3.5" dump pipe off the turbo into 3" then into twin 2.1/4" I run no mufflers nothing just a pipe, its not rediculously loud but its deep with a nice turbo whistle, never been hassled or annoyed by the cops.

Mums old 1HDT had 3.5" dump into a 3" system with a resonator just before the rear diff, it still had a tough note but alot more subtle with alot less turbo whistle.

Now she has a 1HD-FT 80 and has a 3" system with a Lukey muffler and its quiet as, too quiet :P

I just finished building mine 3 inch no muffler and its a little noisy down low and slow but its no different inside the cab from about 60-100....I used the beaudesert dump and got the rest from hi tech exhaust in Sunshine...its a cab chassis and they say to run 1 muffler on wagons

Thats my 80 no mufflers etc. Not my daily any more so dont have to worry as much, even though ive had one copper give me the thumbs up (just after i had it done) as i left an RBT

And another of it really working, it isnt that loud because its so deep. The little 2.8 hilux would drown it out in a dB shoot out.

Is there any noticable difference in performance between these?

3" beauy dump on td42 to 3" mandrel as striaht as possible on GU wagon, no muffler, no worries. Sounds tough as and increase in performance was huge!

I flanged a section in it incase i ever needed to bolt in a muffler for any reason

Never had the two 1HDT's side by side but, i really dont think there was alot between them, mine might have started boosting quicker.

Mums FT is an Auto with a Front mount and 14 psi boost, with slight pump mods.

Mine is a 5sp Man running 10.5 psi boost with the injector pump worked.

Off the lights from 0-80km/h Mine is quicker by say the length of my car. But hit a hill with a load and the FT steams past me. Now i dont know if thats exhaust or the 24valve + front mount + extra boost + Auto.

I would say there really isnt alot between them. I noticed a huge difference going from stock exhaust to the 3" but i think when it comes to mufflers its a matter of what note you want. Surely there wouldnt be a huge effect on power. I could be wrong.

i run a 2.5 inch straight through system on my n/a td42 and dont think its that loud.. i really wouldnt bother if you have a turbo. they are basically a muffler anyway

I got a 3 inch dump pipe and a straight through 3 inch pipe to the back with only a free flowing cat in the middle on my 07 hilux D4D auto.

I absolutely love it.

Nice deep diesel sound and turbo whistle.

sounds the best at low speed under high load and more than half throttle.

Heres a vid of it starting and up and stationary thou the video never does it justice-

anyone got a vid of something with a 3"system with a muffler to compare?

Dont want to offend you guys that posted vids, but you've convinced me, no mufflers is Grimace!!
Dont might the deep throaty sound of a big system, but would definitely want it without the hissing, farting sounds.

what kind of mufflers have you used?

both my GU 4.2tds run 3 inch exhausts with no mufflers. both daily drivers. no farting just turbo spool. the ute is loud but the exhaust only goes about 10cm's past the back of the cab :D

mate i used to have a 3" exhaust on my 2.8 turbo hilux with a fabricated stainless muffler similar in design to a gun silencer and it sounded a lot better than not running one at all but when i fitted a 1jzgte it needed 1 more and it sounds sweet at 7500rpm. cheers darin

I would not worry about it too much, they are not that loud without. Are you doing it yourself or at a shop. If you do not mind me asking where are you getting it done and how much, I am looking at doing mine one day.

loudness is a bit subjective. i used to have a car with big bore, it didn't sound loud but your ears hurt after driving hard for a few hours !

fankly most of those vechiles in the movies sound like crap, i've had tractors sound better.
one of the locals guys runs a smaller nissan with stright through muffler and it sounds like crap untill turbo winds up, then it queitens down and sounds rather nice.

i would put a couple of mufflers in just to get some decent tone to it. with 3" pipes performance loss in minimal.

Like i said mums 1HD-FT has a lukey muffler on a 3" system, can take a short vid for you tomorrow if you like?

The only reason mine sounds crap on vid is because when the Vid was taken my injector pump was F###ed, have since had it fully rebuilt etc etc so sounds much better, not to mension the fact im filming with a poxy little digital camera.

Will take a Vid of mine going up the street then mums tomorrow :)

Tweake. I'de love to know what tractors you guys use in NZ. Come from a farm myself and i can say the only tractor that sounds better then these cars would be our Massey Ferguson 6475 (only cause it has a 6.0L 6cyl Turbo Diesel) All 4cyl tractors sound like puss!

i can't see it being much use without a muffler.. might want to upgrade the brakes though with all that extra power http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_pa ... ducts_id=1

but really if you want a good exhaust get one of these

I have a 3 inch beaudesert system on a 4.2 td pump tweaked GU wagon.
I have a small resonater at the back. Works great. Not too loud - but you can hear it flow !!!

My bro has the same setup in a GU ute. (straigtht thru pipe) His sounds great - huge turbo whistle - much louder than mine.

The wagon CAN give you droning noises with a straight thru pipe.
As it echos through the cabin. You can notice it in mine when I have nothing in the back (not often).

Cheers

built a new exhaust system for the 80series over the weekend. 4" dump pipe made with mandrel bends running inside chassis rail from the turbo to just in front of the gearbox cross member, bolted to engine bellhousing and transfer case, then reduced to 3" to get past transfer case, 3" braided flex, then 3" mandrel bends, maximum bend of 45 deg to get over rear diff and exit just behind rear wheel.

took it for a drive to see how it sounded, and farrk it was loud!!
lots of hissing and crackling noise and really loud turbo whistle, and really loud droning at highway speeds.
It was embarrassing to drive and the neighbours would hate it driving out at 5.00 every morning.
Took it home again and fitted a straight through muffler I had ready to go. The muffler is behind the diff. What a difference!! heaps less noise, no hissing, no crackling, much quieter turbo noise and no noticeable difference in performance.

So I am pretty happy with the result.

cheers for the vids fellas.

For some reason most backyard jobs i've seen have been louder and sounded worse than professional systems - even when of similar construction. Can't think why - maybe longer straight sections?

by 80's_delirious
yeah I was wondering about that. I got it to run very straight with no 90 bends anywhere. The 4"dump pipe has 2 bends of about 75 deg each, every other bend is 45 deg or less.
Started it after I had the dump pipe completed to the transfer case, and damn it was loud, thought the tail pipe would shut it up a bit more than it did. Definitely needed a muffler.
