From a functional point of view it doesn't matter IMO.
If its going to be engineered then best to check with the engineer as IIRC metal is required.
Personally I have plastic and its been fine.

I'd say the poly is the go. I did one about 4 years ago and it was awesome. At the time I asked around there was a fair amount of different advice floating around.

Won’t be engineered...
A few mates said that the poly is crap coz they get damaged easily & can break?
I think if I manage to break a block I deserve it

I've had red poly (of all things cut down poly boat rollers) on my Rocky for about 10 years now, with absolutely no problems whatsoever. Lift is around 2 1/2 inches.

I'm using Acetal.... which is not brittle, but I'm sure its not all that important.
I'd steer away form the really soft plastics like polyurethane however.
