Tyre shopping any suggestions??

Post by Ridge »

At the moment i am running some 235x75 r15 goodyear at/r with a 2" suspension lift on my 98 coily. i am having a 2"body lift fitted with 15 mm coil spacers next tuesday :D. i also have a rear locker with reduction gears.
i have been looking around for tyres for a little bit and i am keen too up size to a 30" with a 1" offset rim if i will still have good clearance.

i do alot of rock/trail stuff and love the mud when ever there is some around i am interested in the

goodyear Wrangler mt/r
cooper discoverer stt
maxxis buckshot mudder

if anyone is running these tyres how do they handle on and off road, and do you get good value for money?

cheers

Tyre Choice

Go the Maxxis but I would (and did) go for Trepadores They come in a 30x9.5x15 Great value for money Usually in a 30" some where around $220-$230 fitted, They have a wicked tread Pattern and they look awsome take a look @ mine :

I also vote for the maxxis, but comparing the wrangler MTR and cooper stt to the buckshot is not fair, the maxxis bighorn is pretty much a copy of the MTR tread so it would be a good buy and probably cheaper. And as BOGFROG said the treapadors would be the next step up, and possibly still cheaper then the MTR's and STT's.

If you are looking at the Maxxis Buckshot, then DONT overlook the Maxxis Bighorn. They are more aggressive than the Buckshots (they are newer - less well known than the Buckshots so far). I run the Bighorns in a 31, and some of my mates are running 33's, and we all swear by them. They are awesome offroad - cleans well in the mud and grabs rocks/dirt really well. They are surprisingly quiet on the highway too. My zook handles better on-road with the Bighorns than it did with the stockies!

I am VERY happy with them! Just my 2c!

i ran 33" coppers and 31" mts on my last car.

i'd be going the coppers if you can pay for them, i found that they got less damage that the mtrs in rocks and bagged better but the side biters on the mtrs were better in the mud.

the big horns look the same as the stt's i had so maybe go with them if people are happy with them.

I ran the Buckshots for about a year and loved them! I only got rid of mine because I went up from 235/75r15 to 235/85r16. They self cleaned beautifully and bagged out nice too. I (unknowingly) went through some bog holes that had bits of steel and assorted junk in them which cut quite deep grooves in the sidewalls but the buckshots are still holding air to this day.
They also didnt wear down very much over the 25,000k I had them for.

I run Cooper stt's 235/75/15 on my every day driver zook and could not fault them ....in the mud or on the highway , they are very quiet on the highway and handle well..but are one of the more expensive...but up the bush they handle really well and next to no wear on them , they should last me ages.

I would agree with you there, i've got the MT-117 Sports and they're fantastic. Plenty of sidewall grip on the rocks and clear mud pretty well too. They're about $200 in 31x10.5. I'm considering getting the MT-117 Extremes once these wear out but i'm not sure if they're needed after seeing what the Sports will tackle.

I can attest to this, I abuse the hell out of my buckshots and they are extremely tough. My mate had a patrol comp ute on silverstone extremes and they chipped out and wore badly on the same tracks that hardly affected my buckshots. For the money they are a very tough tyre with very good tread depth, lack of sidewall tread is their only downfall.

But that would only be because of the lug size on the silverstones and the patrol being a heaps heavier truck would wear them quicker yeah??

Im not saying the maxxis buckshots are no good, never read a bad word about them but to me for some weird reason i wouldnt buy a set & im not sure why, i think its because i dont like the look of the tread or the logo on the side haha stupid i know.

Tho id split with the money for a set of maxxis bighorns/creepies (creepies look tough  ) keep your eyes peeled for a barely worn 2nd hand set and save some cash!! :)

I have 235/75 r15 MTR's. My tyres so far have travelled 71,000km and I reckon that they have plenty of life left in them. I haven't got one puncture or damaged any of the tyres in any way shape or form. Off road, I cant really fault them, they are great in mud and pretty much everything else I throw at them! I have also run STT's on my Paj, but the front tyres wore out in just 50,000km (uneven tread).

I wouldn't buy them either, except on a tight budget. They came with my zook and are bloody cheap, just saying they are good value. Like I said though they are not comparable to some of the more hardcore tread patterns.

just picked up the tires and wheels today, and they are awesome.

went for a mud hunt as soon as they were fitted and got through everything my mate in a patrol with 33 mtz can get through. i used to need a helpful winch with the old a/t.

even made a deal and got the tires for $195 a piece, so i am real happy.
