My 4b is underpowered.

I have 4.44 diffs.

I can get 4.771 ring and pinons for front and back at a cost of $1500.

Here's the question.... is it worth it?????

Your the only one who can answer that..

Have you thought of stoppin throwing $ at that car since its harder to get bits for cheaper, and startin with something more capable?

Many times, but too many people have given me the same advice so I guess I just gotta do it to see if I can

maybe its been good advice..

do you think you will ever get 1/10th back on your highly modded investment in the end? not that we build cars to sell. but no use spending it since there 0 market for modded couriers.

The underpowered side is maybe different to the need for lower gearing.
Power in high range will only change by the % diff in each gear. Most people with oversize tyres and standard gearing just change down more often or use 4th instead of overdrive (5th) on hills and highway, towing etc.
If you see a need for lower gears for steep offroad work than its a different question.

Maybe your power option may be fixed with tuning options?

Not worth that investment. If you are going to continue down the line of modifying a vehicle to do progressively more difficult stuff then you will need a more adaptable platform to start with. Probably worth considering getting rid of yours and looking at maybe a GQ or something like that and going from there. you can pick up a LWB GQ from $11 000 and go from there

Increase your tyre size at the same time - then it will be more worthwhile

A question no one else has asked .. what could you get for your current diffs .. if you can see em off for a decent sum .. it may be worth it, people driveing patrols swap 4.6's in place of 3.9's or 4.1 all the time.

So I dont see why it would be a waste on any other vehicle ..

$1500 you would get a basic range rover for that ... good starting platform - weekender, mod the ass out of it and drive your courier during the week. I know that sort of proposition can be hard to explain to your Minister of Finace ..... as is the case with me but it is worth a thought

I am not trying to be a troll here and suggest sh*t that will upset ya
just trying to outline some alternatives

That sort of ratio change will probably make a difference to your on road driving and very little off road.

So if you are only doing it for better offroad then dont bother. But if its for on road then yes I would do it.

What yo really need is some transfer gears.

And build what you got. Every man and his dog has got a toyota or nissan.

I was thinking along these lines too, hence the reluctence to get rid of it. How hard is it to adapt a transfer case?

I'm all for buildin what you got but I also had to realise that I'm a uni student with enough mechanical nouse to bugger around with suspension and perform maintenance

I'm not a qualified welder, do not have access to great tools and equipment etc and don't have a great deal of spare time/ cash, whatever spare I have I'd rather devote to driving :D

All I'm saying is know what you're aiming for and whether your courier can match that outside of dreamland ;) Don't waste gobs of $ on it and get no return when you decide you should have started with a patrol  Cars cost enuff anyway without that

If the courier can cut it then cool  Would be different :D

what sorta motors do they have?

get a supercharger off a 4cyl toyota (4agze i think) they are good for upto about 4.0L donks and are able to turn on and off by the flick of a switch, so when you want power turn it on, when you want fuel economy turn it off. i think you could pick one up and adapt it for 1500 or less.
theres a place in geelong that sells them for 395 bucks

The motor is basiclly a Mitsu 2.6lt (they are part of the G6 group like they put in the magna back in 93). The heads are a little unusual in that they are a 12 valve (2 inlet and 1 outlet per pot). What places in Geelong sell them and are they on the net? Surprised there would be any left at that price.
