8" shackles?

There is this guy I know around here and he has the tallest Hilux I have ever seen. it only has 35" tyres but it sits up over my waist when im standing (and im 6'3), anyway, he came to work with it and we got talking and he said he will make mine pretty high as well for $200 plus parts.
He said all he is going to do to it is put on 8" shackles front and rear and thats it.
When I asked him if I have to upgrade anything he looked at me lost and said "like what? thats all the susp mods ive done on my ute" he also said though his front tailshaft fell out due to it being lifted so high.
He reckons I dont have to upgrade anything like steering, brake lines, cables etc etc. Seeing as my ute never goes off road besides some fun in the mud in summer is it ok to do this? He just went to the steel shop and got his made up and he has been driving it like that everyday for about 3 years now with no trouble.

why would u want it that tall tho? it would be a pain in the ass, not to mention look stupid, and when n if u do take it offroad will perform poorly..with that much lift ud wanna extend brakelines, front tailshaft, the angle of the draglink would be all kinds of wrong...

just dont do it lol

aha! thats what i was worried about, the drag link, those things cost to much to stuff up. As for the look.............i'll get flamed for this but I love it! im always looking at websites in the usa with these massive lift kits etc etc I just love it.

mate, find an auto-engineer in your area and ask him the best way to achieve what you're after... 8" shackles is just plain dangerous.

Seriously, 8"!!! They are dangerous.

I prolly shouldn't show you this link, you might get ideas :D... but heres some of the more stupid crap they do in the US just for height. If you read through a lot of it i'm sure you'll work out why excessively long shackles are bad.

The reasons it is wrong.
1. 8 inch shackles in the front will give you really really really bad steering
2. You will chew out bushes very rapidly
3. Brake lines ( to short now )
4. Steering .. Ball joints will flog out in no time
5. Also steering .. Bump steer
7. did I mention steering .. You axle will not stay centered under the vehicle
8. Massive increase in centre of gravity with no benifit .. and reduced ability to do anything about it (IE emergancy avoidance)
9. Your truck will not want to drive in a strait line anymore .. you will fight it constantly.
10 .. there are heaps more reasons .. but that is just a bit abotu the front end and I think enough reasons to do it properly or not at all.

11. if you are in an accident whilst running those shackles, the assessor will look at them, laugh, pick up the book, throw it at you, laugh again.

Ok, I just got back from his place and seems as though I got it really wrong....His shackles are 8" so thats 3" longer than standed, and belive me you couldnt bend them even if you tryed to, the things are that strong and thick, he also has a tube going through the center of them to stop them bending just in case.
His drag link has been upgraded as the standed one wasnt long enough, as well as other steering bits.
Suspension: Front and rear springs have been re-set as well as a extra leaft added.
He wants to put 7" shackles on my ute (only 2" longer than standed) and add another leaf as well, he also said my steering link (drag link) will need to be upgraded as well.
He took me for a spin in his truck and man, it handles pretty good for such a high truck, even on the freeway it was fine.
So im spending abit more money but am going ahead with it.

2" or 3" extended shackles are quite common.

They are not the correct way to lift the suspension, they are a cheap dodgy fix.

It will still throw the castor out, which means your steering is altered, maybe not enough to be a problem, but certainly altered from factory setup.

The best way to do it properly is a proper suspension lift. You can get 3" suspension lifts but they are not going to be as cheap as a few extended shackles.

Yeah that makes a bit more sense.

2" longer shackles I'd give a go, its not like their hard to swap over if you put them in and you find they make your 4b drive like a dog.
