was brainstorming of how i could correct running 31's on the speedo, so i brainstormed and came up with a digital speedo that is calibrated to the 31's diameter. so like a little gadget with an lcd screen that is only in use when you turn it on - to show the actual speed your doing with bigger tyres, and when not needed you can turn it off

then you could use the stock speedo for stock tyres and the digital speedo for when you run the bigger tyres!!!!


anyone else brainstormed this before??? what was the result???

Just use a bicycle speedo calibrated for the 31's - easy

However, if you buy a cheap GPS or satnav your speedo will always be right and never need "calibration"

Besides the fact that this isn't exactly legal, but you can pick up GPS units for less than $100, that give a actual read out of your speed. Just use that all the time? Not sure how much a digital speedo is, but it would have to be about $70, unless you made it yourself....$20 or so.

i thought you could just turn a screw inside the stock speedo to calibrate them... (it may have been vitara's but thought it was the sierra's)

get a gps it will work everywhere except tunnels, and then you just have to same stock speedo reading to ride it out

gps it is then tunnles......what tunnles lol theres only like 1 tunnel i drive through once in a blue moon so gps will do the trick!!!

just so you know - i had my speedo calibrated professionally to pass engineering - it was $110 incl. gst.... and its DEAD accurate (verified with GPS - 60 on guage is 58.5 realtime, and more accurate at 100km/hr). The lever you can adjust on the speedo only does the 50/50 on the speedo... so moving it will only make the speedo more accurate for about a 10km/hr area on the guage, depending on where you position it.

leave the gadgets and do it properly the first time round =)

How did you manage to get it proffesionally calibrated alien? From what I heard many have tried and failed.

That's correct if you only ever run one tyre size, or aren't planning on playing with your gearing in the future.

for $110 you can have a speedo which reads correct regardless of what tyres or gears you have, and has added features.

true steve - but mine also had to read correctly to pass engineering =) its the law..

Mine was calibrated by adding about 10-12mm of spring to the speedo needle, soldered on, re-assembled and tested for accuracy - he got it spot on first go. Checked on GPS and oscilliscope.

These are quite cool, legal and not badly priced. IIRC there is an Australian agent in Melbourne.

That little digital dash looks sweet and would reduce weight even more Like a little MOTEC dash.

Yes I like them - very professional and rugged. Its on the to do list ( but then so is a million other things ). Personally i'm not all that keen on the blue backlight but with some work other colors might be possible.

You could spend MUCH more than that on individual gauges, not have the same functionality and certainly not look as functional.

A very practical modification that solves heaps of problems IMO

There is a kit that i can make that is a digital speedo, and it also doubles as a speed alert. I have one, it is very accurate and only takes one push of a button to calibrate. The kits are not assembled, as in everything needs to be soldiered in place. If i have a few people wanting them, i could make a few up. They only require 4 magnets to be bonded to the tailshaft and the sensor held in place with a simple bracket. I could do the kits for approximately $130 fully assembled. I can post anywhere. Below is a picture of what they look like assembled.

yeah it is. It would be cheaper the more there are. They are $60 for the kits themselves, and take about 1.5 hours to make properley. Im a qualified auto electrician so i know how to do thing properly.

$130 - makes the acewell one look like excellent value, and in a completely different league as far as finish. Jaycar one no odometer etc etc.......

It does not care what gearing/tyres etc you are running because it is calibrated empirically.
