Just a quick question. will synthetic rope work on a PTO and survive? i know that synth rope doesn't like the heat associated with internal drums on electric winches, just wondering if anything about PTO design/function would severely limit the lifespan of synthetic?

Yep works no problem ,a large portion of the winch challenge trucks over hear in NZ run pto with Synthetic..Cheers

Cant see any reason why it wouldn't .. no electics to heat up, or internal brake drums on the winch etc.

If yout worred you can get the synth winch rope that is heat resistant ( see pauls thread about his pop rivited on winch) for the first few wraps and then normal winch rope for the rest.

yeah that thread is what made me think of it. i just don't have enough experience with either PTO's (just bought one) or synth cable to be sure i haven't overlooked any factors.

A while back my neighbour busted his dragging a HUGE mofo stump around ... when I helped replace the shear pin at the winch end moments after it busted .. The gearbox etc was stone cold.

I investigated using synthetic rope rather than steel cable and the only con's i could find is that it doesnt last long or survive if its left on the drum out in the elements, sun, rain, etc tend to deteriorate the rope (or so I was told)..

I run steel cable and it gets virtually no maintenance bar a respool at the end of a camping/wheeling trip..

How hard would it be to stick a bit of polycarbonate over the drum ... weather and UV protection.

How hard is it to lug steel cable through difficult terrian V's nice light no splinters poly rope.

There will be no issue as far as heat goes. Mine barly used to get warm and that was after lots of long pulls.
The brake on a PTO is the worm drive. Just the way they work. The drum cant turn the shaft.

there is also a brake on the rhs of the winch drum but its only to stop it freespooling too much i would guess theres only about 200-500 grams of force on it its never gonna heat it up
