Driving home in 2wd, large bang from under the car and transfer pops out of 2wd to neutral and no drive to rear wheels. Locked in hubs and H4wd and drove home with front drive only. Assuming possible transfer problem or rear diff. Any ideas on how to chase this down to the problem area? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Ian

Drain oils, look for large metal chunks.

yer mate just look inside the diff and tranie case to see if there is any chunks of metal floating around. also have alook at both your rear uni joint on your drive line, you could have popped the walsh plug in the end, (cant remember off the top of my which one has it) and that means that all the grease up inside drive line has a place to escape, and no how much grease gets pumped into them none goes onto the spine, and one day like what happend to you it just lockes up destroying everything. so lets not hope its that. just have alook at your driveline and both diff oil and tranie oil for metal chunks.

Have someone look under your car from a safe place while you try to drive it as normal in 2wd. If the tailshaft rotates and you don't move - it is the diff. If it doesn't rotate - it is the transfer.

Also, if it was the diff, it would most likely be making bad sounds while you were moving via front wheel drive because the wheels would be turning the diff and if it was damaged it would not be quiet.

I vote it is the transfer.
