NG Engine woes

ok so i think my head has gone in my paj, it was blown all the coolent into the resiviour tank and the temperature gauge sits slightly higher when run at high speed and climbs when i slow down, (99% its the head the same thing happened in my subaru with the same symptoms)
its happened at a rather poor time i dont have much cash (i got a quote for a full engine recon, including fitting new hoses leads radiator water pump etc, for 3g) and im still a few pay packets away from this figure, how safe is it to drive? when i do get it done, i would like to acchieve slightly more power and torque lower down in the rev band, what is needed, should i turbo it, or just get the 6G72T out of the 300gt (i think thats the one)
as mentioned i have the 1989/90 NG pajero, coupled to the 5speed manual (V5MT1)
thanks in advance
