Im currently interested in buying a 98 - 00 gu patrol.

It will be 2.8L turbo deisel.

Just want know how these go & is it the right choice.

Plans are 2.5" lift kit + shocks & set of 33 muddies.

cheer :)

Some hold the view that the 2.8 lacks low end torque for off road use- I tend to agree.

Drive one and see if you can live with it. I'd rather have a 4.2 diesel but they will cost more to buy.

If you get a manual 2.8, make sure there is plenty of life left in the clutch - they can be expensive to replace because of the dual mass flywheel.

My advice would be steer well clear of these , they are known to be probs . The engine has common faults with heads and injection pumps , all costly exercises and low down power is seriously lacking . For the same cash you can get a late GQ 4.2 diesel (best engine of all ) or a GU 4.5 petrol and with the price of diesel these days the fuel costs close to the same with out the 5000 km services required by a turbo diesel.
Hope this helps steer you in the right direction.

Ok den, well i have read abit about it, 3L doesnt get much better from what i read, plus cost alot more due newer model.

what if i go toward a 94-96 gq?

all info is helpfully, dont wanna buy something that is useless.

MATE there is a great 4.2litre GU for sale on patrol4x4.com !
I don't know what your budget is but that one is worth a look mate!
It's very clean and alllready has a few mods like bullbar and lift.

It's pretty much like mine when I bought it and I couldnt' be happier with it!
Pretty of power low down!

There will probably be a few 2.8 owners that will disagree, and I can't say anything bad about the 2.8 as I have naver driven one, but the 4.2s are great!

Yeah, I was going to say check out the one on patrol4x4, even with the freight it would be worthwhile.

Budget is 20g at most, im in qld also

Its really confusing, im over the days cruising around on my p's, police just always on my back.

I start'd off wanting a gq, gu 2.8 came along in my 20g budget.

Is there the same issues in low end torque for the gq rx 2.8L turbo diesel?

So maybe a 4.2l deisel gq is a goer, nice lift kit & sum muddies have some fun in ?

All cars have issues - some more than others.. Try searching here for threads on 2.8's..

Some people who have em love em, others buy them as they are cheap as chips, and then do engine conversions on them. This is an option if your good with tools, and shit for doing th work yourself - if your payin someone else to do the work, then dont start...

What do you want to do with the truck?
Towing?
Hard core?
Weekend warrior?
Daily driver?
No idea yet - just need something?

late model GQ's in 4.2's are gettin harder to find in good condition. if you find one, I wouldnt pass it up I dont think.

YMMV>

you should have no trouble picking up an early GU 4.2 for 20k.. I bought my 01 model ute a few years back for not much more than that and it had lift muddies etc..

Absolutely mate!

And if your budget is 20g then you still have plenty leftover from 15g!
Put it aside or buy some tyres and little bits and pieces.

The 4.2GU I drive is my first 4b too, and probably my last as I want to keep it forever  Love it!

The only thing, they are too pretty, that's why I will buy a GQ 4.2 as weekend warrior and keep the GU as a tourer

imho i would go a gq over a gu for your 1st fourby, due to cheaper on panels etc etc

you can pic Gq's in 4.2 petty very cheap these days

spends 5-10k on a Gq then spend the rest on modding it, you would have a very capable 4wd

cheers adam

In that case, I'd be starting with a cheaper GQ for round $6k..

If its something your going to learn in, chances are of panel damage.. GU's arent cheap to repair...

Plenty of goodies out there for GQs and GUs used, but you could do a lot worse than a GQ to learn in.

cheers all for ya inputs, leading me in the right direction.

i shall keep a eye out for 4.2l gq maybe something granny spec & then do some supension work + tires.

should i also keep away from the 2.8l turbo diesel in the gq ?

also what do you think about k's, many k's are to many?

A 2.8 in a GQ is no better than a 2.8 in a GU.

If you find a 4.2D GQ, dont worry too much about km - I've had a couple with over 500,000 and they werent worn out. High km will probably mean you get a better deal.

I bought a 96 RX 2.8L off an old dude about a month ago and it pretty much hadnt been off road, soo clean! and since ive put a 3" mandrel bent exhaust on it and a boost controller to wind it up a bit and now it goes and sounds great! im happy as with it, putting a 2" lift kit in it this weekend.

buy one with all the gear on it and save thousands... you may scare yourself finding out how much it is to kit out a 4b with properly setup accessories/suspension etc.
