Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hi guys,

i had a terrible weekend 4wding the weekend before last and came away from it with decent dent from a bullbar.

what i want to know is how would you fix the following damage?, keeping in mind its not a daily, i dont need it looking good just functional.



my idea's - after removing the fibre glass top.

1. build a magical contraptions to mount a jack too and a nice thick peice of flat bar and litterally jack the shit out of it till its about level. - problem with this is i have nil welding skills and haven't the patients for trial and error.

2. slide hammer.. another thick peice of flatbar to bring it out evenish and a few strategically placed holes to bolt through and use my weight as an advantage for once and smash the shit of it back out - good points to this is i have the knowledge and skills to do this. there is little i think i can fuck up on it and its minimal outlay if it doesnt work.

3. round up a posse and a 9" angle grinder and make it a ute.

and before you say insurance. out of respect of the deceased and his family i refuse to even try to claim it through on insurance (and i'm 99%sure it would be writen off), and i would like to do this on my own just as if toby was there beside me making crude remarks.

any ideas or ways to improve my ideas to repair it would be appreciated[/img]

Porta power the pillar back out and for the panel use a block of wood on the outside and knock it as flat as possible from the inside with a hammer. After that, bog it up and a coat of paint.

can you get into the space behind the damage?
if so start with a block of wood ie 3x2" and a large hammer and carefully tap it out in stages (not smashing the f k out of it)
a long bar pushed carefully on the panel will be visible from the outside so you know you are hitting in the right spot
when you have the bulk of it out things like a ply bar can push out smaller dents without much damage if sortof wiped acoss the rear of dent
give me a yell if you need any more help

i can get in behind there no worries to use a lump of wood and a hammer.

not knowing for sure what a porta power is i assume its a hydraulic ram that would be used to push the pillar back out. assuming this is correct it what i wanted to do with the bracing and a bottle jack. i'm just unsure of where to brace the jack and jig i would have to make.

would i be best just going to a local smash repairs just to get the piller pushed back out. and beat the rest?

go to a wreckers with your 9" and ask to cut the back out of an old one, weld it into yours

I would jack it out , but I would use timber instead of metal , Cheers Paul.

i used to own a panel shop
dont take to your zook with a grinder like some tools here tell you
if your not confident knocking it out take it to your local panel shop and tell them to just potal power and basicly knock out the worst of it for you offer them cash you will probably get out of if for a couple of hours labour
then have a go at the smaller stuff yourself its good practice as its probably not the last repair you will need to do.

DONT BOG OVER PAINT
if the bog is more than 12 - 15 mm thick you should really knock it out a little more but thats up to you really

smash it out or take to panel beaters n try n get it fairly even, the get a peice of checherplate and over it. (ie the entire panel)

For a couple of hundred $$ you could always see whats around and pick up a complete body tub and just swap them over. Body swaps are good fun and you may even end up with something better than what you started with if you're prepared to look for a month or two.

I wouldn't bother too much about it, but you should be able to give it a good kick and it will pop back. The Sierra panels aren't exactly the strongest on the planet

I don't like checkerplate, mostly because it grabs rock/dirt and can jam the car up.
Aluminium checkerplate is even worse in this regard, and can't easily be painted either.

Smooth steel is much better.

I've re skinned the whole rear 3/4 of a sierra in 1.6mm and once painted it looked fine.

Chicks dig body damage though.

it looks a little more tan just panel damage. the b pillar has been bent too.

for the b pillar, get a ratchet strap or winch and pull back in the opposite direction to try and straighten that up a little.

try and fix a winch or ratchet to the rear 1/4 too. might get some of the structural bends back to slightly straight and then try dressing it out with hammer/foot.

i'd definately try a block of timber though to belt up against the panel.

try to define where the bullbar hit at the worst points and try and pull them back in the opposite direction.

if all else fails find a new tub.

Push it back out & get it to fairly straight (drivable).
Keep wheeling the shit out of it. When the body is totally rooted, buy a ‘wrecking’ sierra with a half decent body, swap them over, then sell the sierra off with your body on it for ‘wrecking’ again…

I definatley don't want to replace the tub as it will just get dented to shit again. The zook will never be nor have i ever wanted it to be a show car or even pretty.
i just want to get that pillar back out a bit and also get it so the wheel well wont cut the shit out of my tyre.

thanks for all the advice guys. the block of wood and hammer will come into play and i might duck down the road to a local panel shop to see if someone wants to do a cashie and pump that pillar back out.

ide do your slide hammer idear, cound get a bit of flat bar inbehind it. Drill a hole through the gard and attatch the flat bar to a rod, then move and or drill more holes to suit the shape u want.
Can also make the flat bar inside into diff shapes to get it right! Then just fill the holes

Coincidentally i have a spare tub in my back yard (at Maitland) i want to get rid of.

I'm definatley picking up what your putting down with the hi lift jack idea. i'll have to invest in one i think. cheap and i'll use it again in the future.

i'm in charlestown but the car lives at edgeworth.
