Hilux Rear Diff?

I can rotate my rear tail shaft about 1/4 turn. Is this normal? It clunks when accelarating away from a stationary position. It has no forward/backwoard movement only rotational.
Is it the diff or the transfer that may have the problem? 1990 petrol diffs to sierra transfer.
Any ideas would be great.
Cheers,
Andrew

Clunking from take will more likely to be Uni get under there and wiggle it about any moved its stuffed.
If the whole shaft is turning with the pinion then you have crazy ring and pinion wear

Check your centre bearing too- Mine loosened up over 340,000kms, and had a heap of play, when i re-torqued the nut after putting the new bearing in, the staking was about 2/3 of a turn further around!

ok. uni's seem alright no play, tight as.
Still have about 1/4 turn and get a clunk noise from diff when rotating quickly.
ferrit the diff was replaced about 12 months ago after it letgo. But will check it now.

The centre bearing is the assemly between the two rear shafts (unless you have a 1 piece shaft)
