I know for a fact that the 2.8 driveshafts have a smaller flanges than the 4.2, I just changed the flanges on the transfer from the 4.2 to the flanges from the 2.8. They are the same length. I think that the 3 litre would be similar.

they are different

4.3 and 4.6 centres use the same ones
3.9 and 4.1 centres are the same ones

yes

but you have to be sure that you have the front and the back end of teh shaft the right way.
when you place the shaft on the ground the bearing retainers should be clocked exactly the same on the font half and the back half.

something to keep in mind though is that you tailshaft balance will be less than ideal doing it this way as the front end and the back end are foreign. ( 9 times out of 10 you will not notice the difference.)

Personally , if i were you i would get a pinion flange from a 4.1 or 3.9 ratio centre and the tailshaft from teh same and slot them in. ( the tailshaft is beefier aswell)

I think the 3lt GQ flanges are the same size/bolt pattern as MQ/MK patrol type. But not 100% certain though

Are the flanges interchangeable from small to big on the diff centres??

I'm pretty sure they are. Large and small flanges are definitely interchangeable on the GQ transfer case.
