8/87 60 series steering uni joint replaceable??

I have a 8/87 build HJ61 cruiser, been doing a overhaul on engine, suspension and more.

The steering joint between the columm and the steering box has a small uni-joint near the steering box, with caps approx. 15mm in dia. and 38mm between each end of the caps.

Has anyone ever replaced one of these? are the Uni's available? Toyota want to supply the whole part, not much change out of $600.00, and it has to come from Japan!!

The caps seem to be held in by the joint holder being peened over...

What's wrong with it?

Is there any play in it?

Is there a grease nipple under the boot to lube it?

no grease nipple to lube.

is a bit stiff, but only on one axis.

I could probably pull it apart and grease it up, but if it is apart, I may as well put a new uni-joint into it.

Other option is to use an early model 60 series steering shaft, which uses a bigger uni-joint that is replaceable. (this might be the easiest thing to do)

Mine is an 85 and it has a grease nipple. I agree if you pull it apart to lube it up you may as well replace it. I did not know the 60's had differing steering shafts.

OK, if anyone has been watching this thread, you may be interested to know that the universal joint IS available through CBC. It is the same as a 75 series cruiser (not sure if Toyota tell you that a 75 series shaft is not rebuildable too, but more that likely).

Cost for the uni which is a 16mm yoke, 39mm width is $25.00. Just a matter of pressing the old one out then the new one in and re-peening the yoke.

Oh, what a feeling, Toyota $600.00+ from Japan......... :finger: $25.00 with a bit of research... :D
