softening up the suspension GQ

hi guys,

I have just bought a LWB GQ Patrol with a host of goodies but it also has a 4 inch coil lift. The previous owner didnt know what brand the kit was but the coils are a sort of greeny/blue colour and the shocks are white with no stickers or branding on them but apparently foam cell. I kinda think it is an Ironman kit but maybe not :roll:

anyway, took it off road this weekend and the ride is very firm to almost hard and I was wondering what kits others have that gives a nice soft ride but still has some decent flex and ariculation. I want to keep to a 4 inch lift as I need the clearance for bush work. It also has adjustable panhard rods, castor bushes and disconnect front and rear swaybars.....nice :lol:

looking for suggestions pls :D

try going with a set of springs from superior engineering. they have various spring weights to suit your needs and a set of tough dog adjustable shockies. you can even get the in cab adjuster so you don't have to get out

Agree Superior stuff is generally pretty good, I have the Dobinson made flexy coils 4-5" supposed to be to Suspension stuffs specification, ie Long soft spring that keeps going and going down, very happy so far.

and which shocks are you using with those coils - procomps?

If you like a soft ride then the procomp shocks are going to be perfect for you.

I think the coils you have are Dobinsons. Try changing just the shocks over first, you may be surprised because the shocks make a big difference. Having said that you could have extra heavy duty Dobinsons coils.

Agreed. I'd try changing/removing the shock first to see if its the shocks restricting travel/limiting travel speed.

thanks Shane, I was going to ring you today as I thought of fitting procomps to it to see how it would soften up with them as my disco was very very nice with procomps on it :lol: if I can get the GQ to ride like the disco (to a degree) then I would be one happy guy :roll:

Will be interesting, i'm not wanting to hijack but i'll do the same when my Procomps arrive as the general consensus is that I have extra heavy duty Dobinsons as well. Have you measured the od of your coils and turns etc?

no, not yet. is that how you work out what rate they are... what should HD coils be compared to light duty ones..anyone know? shane??

pass dude...i'm sure Shane or someone will confirm or deny that.
I checked mine (I know they are Dobinsons but thats all), all 4 are 19mm OD with the fronts being 9 full turns and the rear 8 full turns and a 'greeny blue' funningly enough.

From what I have learnt the thicker the spring and the lesser the spirals - the firmer it is. The thinner the diameter and the more the spirals means the softer it is. I'm happy to be corrected if i'm not quite right :D

the rear flex isnt too bad, but have bought 29.5 inch rear procomps which shane reckons will be a tad longer than the rear coils. He said they will be fine unless I am jumping the GQ....ha like thats gunna happen :finger: so this flex might get a bit better, wait and see

front coils - 9 wraps and about 19mm diameter

rear coils - 8 wraps and about 20mm diameter

what does that mean - HD or not :roll:

Generally speaking I would say you have extra heavy duty front coils to suit a winch and normal duty rear coils. The coils I sell have 9 turns in the rear though so they would feel a tad softer unless you can't count.
You can get softer

My rear flexy coils are also 20mm so they give a similar ride to the normal duty rear coils. I have a 21mm wire design but so far I chosen not to get them made up.

thanks shane. It is a diesel, has dual batteries, a big steel bar and winch over the front end so I should probably stick to a HD coil in the front.

the rear, well, will wait and see how the procomps go. If its still too firm, I might change them to a softer coil. If it sits down too far in the rear when loaded, I can fit air bags inside the coils. I dont tow anything but it will get loaded up a few times a year with a families worth of camping gear so we will see how it goes.

I think you will be surprised how much difference the shocks make. It will be interesting to hear your feedback.
