That poor little 3F .. pulling those big 35's. No wonder you're complaining you've got no power. When you say power do you mean torque for towing or HP for outright speed?
Why don't you want to swap the motor? How much more power or torque do you want? Usually power/speed achieved is a direct result of $$ spent (not always but usually).
If you don't want to swap out the motor then I guess that leaves turbo charging, super charging or just some engine work if you don't want much of an increase however I suspect you might spend just as much $$ as an engine swap.
What have you considered so far?

if motor in great condition why not just swap the diff gears to get back the original performance on the 35's, then look at modding the engine if you want.

Original is 4.1 diffs, I'd suggest 4.88's is where you should be looking.
But it is a 3F remember, it's a torquey tractor motor, not a race car.

1fz's get along pretty well

When the engine goes in my 80 that's what I would like to do. Are you posting up some pics etc along the way? Would like to see your results!

How long is a piece of string... or more important, how deep are your pockets?
A merlin engine out of a spitfire would be nice... fitting it is another question.
Work out how much 'power' you want, ie whether you want torque or HP and work backwards.
Do a search for '80ute' and see what he has in his 80 series ute, then have a look at heathgu's duramax install into a GU ute and look at the dyno sheets. There is 2 big engines, making big power in the diesel and petrol categories :d
Dang it... you dont want to do motor swap... is it a 3f-E? perhaps consider straight gas turbo. YMMV

Yeah i think look at your diff ratios.
and maybe tweak the exhaust??
perhaps a Hiclone? - i cant believe nobody suggested that. you guys are getting slow.

Is it a 3F OR 3FE? You could do a low boost turbo. Do you want it leagle? Engineered? If you only want 20% more power buy a series 2 4.5 and sell your vehicle. So many options and bugets.

definately buy a cheap 95 plus 80 series, swap parts and sell your 3f as bits..or keep it and use it for your insurance policy, save 1k per year and put your new cruiser up 6 inches

you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. I had one the same with heaps of gear on it, found a '96 on gas (4.5 injected of course) and got it for $9750, swap all the gear over and still got $9000 for the old one.
(I think I got lucky though)
Way more power in the injected. (Would like to go to straight gas and get the original power back though, PM me if you know how to set it for straight gas anyone?)

no it's not, it's a destroked tractor motor. they make fawk all low down torque compared to the 1fz-fe or a 2f

I'd Suggest Re-gearing back to original Ratios.
I have a 1FZ-FE with Genuine 156,000 km's still in the car here and it's up for sale.
PM me if interested.

give you nine grand for it!!
I found out that the 3f car I bought's genuine 200 000kms was actually 300 000. My neighbor wound it back himself.
Luckily he didn't tell me till after I'd passed it on. Not sure what I'd have done if I'd have known. (Besides knee cap him
)
ok

you gonna buy mytank's?
I would mate. You won't regret it as long as you buy the right one. Shame yes but the shame is that they used that motor in such a nice vehicle. No good waitn till the 3f dies then converting it cuase it will probly go forever!

what would the diff ratio change over cost? I would check that out before going to the hassel of changing cars.

still reckon you'd be chasing your tail. It might go faster in the low gears but without the power the top gear would be useless. That's my 2cents worth anyway.

that's alot of coin to spend... and most likely you'll be worse off than if you'd have stuck with a 1fz-fe.

no idea wth an L98 is, but in general, a 4bie, offroad, needs nice low down gobs of torque.
long stroke = low down torque. most 8's don't have a long stroke.
the 1fz-fe is a nice, modern torquy 6 with a bulletproof bottom end, and for the price of the l98, you could get a rolled 80 series, so everything needed for the swap, with plenty of spares to sell off

Out of interest, what is different about a post 95 80 series 4.5 litre, as opposed to the pre 95 4.5 litre???

pre 95 uses oxygen sensor and flow meter efi, post uses air mass meter and makes more power, 100 series makes more again with map sensor.
With the post 95, you can bolt a turbo on and it will look after itself. pre needs more efi to get it working.
