New Engine for 99 NL diesel pajero

Just wondering if anybody could help me out here. I have a 99NL 2.8TD pajero and the engine is pretty sad. I'd like to keep the car and put in another engine. Can I simply put in the newer 3.2 DiD engine in or should I just put in another 2.8 in (or is there another easy fit option). Thanks in advance guys.

One of the guys on here is always talking about the 3.2 using the same block as the 2.8 but I dont know much more than that. I say go for it, the NL is a great base, I love mine but its a V6.

I would go the 3.2 DiD, but I can't promise you it's a straight-forward swap. Somebody needs to find out sooner or later - would you like to do us all a massive favour?
I guess I would start by taking to both engines with a tape measure. Perhaps try an engine whole-saler? If they think there's a sale in it they might let you compare the two motors side by side?
Then take masses of photographs of engine bays - your 2.8 and a 3.2 in a Gen 3. Spend a few hours looking at all the differences, and working out what's likely to be signficant, and what's not.
I would probably post in Gen 4x4 Tech, asking for advice on engine swaps in general - what to look out for, what are the pitfalls. There's masses of people in there who have done more significant swaps than this one.
Good luck,
Scott
3.2 swap

I looked into this mod for my NL with both a NP and a NL on a hoist the swap did not look to hard. Engine mounts seemed to be the same, radiator hoses ets all seemed to go to the same sides. I would suggest if you are going to attempt this project to buy a donor car so you have everything? I was going to purchase a triton as it was manual and I could swap diffs to suit ratios however all 3.2 tritons as NS pajeros I believe are CRD which have a can bus system which will mean the whole loom will have to be used including instrument cluster to talk to the body control module. My suggestion would be to go for a NM or NP after studing this loom it seems to have no hidden suprises.

The engine block for the 2.8 4m40 and the 3.2 Di-D 4m41 are virtually identical. All existing peripherals will therefore bolt on.
The head, turbo and injector pump are totally different, though.
Mechanically it is thus a bolt-on exercise.
The radiator for the 4m40 is fine as well.
The real work is in the electrics and electronics.
Unless you are a real wiz, you will need the full wiring loom out of the Di-D donor, complete with all sensors, ECU, transponder and key barrel.
(We did three of them and it is worth the effort. The Di-D is in a different league compared to the 2.8.
Worth the money? Depends on the price you can get a Di-D for)
I can provide more details if required.

The three brothers did Di-D (no pun) transplants:
1. My Gen1 had a Chevy 4.3 v-6 and Borg Warner 5-spd
2. My younger brother's Gen1 had a 2.5 with auto-box in
3. The eldest brother had a 2.8 SWB with auto box.
We all opted for 5-spd transmissions (the engine had enough electronics on its own).
So, no experience of the 3.5 to Di-D transplant.
There was a member of the Pajero 4WD Club of Victoria who did the 3.5 to Di-D transplant. IIRC his name was NHShorty on that forum. His first name was Ben.

I have lost contact with him.
I would in any case suggest that you buy a wreck or at least a front clip.

yeah Ben had a 3.5l NL with a supercharger on it. He then replaced the 3.5l with the 3.2 DID. He was pretty cluey.
Dont know what happened to him. If you PM me I have an old email address for him that might still be active
cheers.
