NJ Pajero Transfer Case - WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!

Ok, so here goes. Tonight i changed all my tyres. I put it in 4wd high (centre diff locked) so the front wheels wouldn't freely spin. No problems. Put the car back into 2wd.

Later when i went to go out, i noticed that the centre diff lock light was flashing (i don't know about the front wheel's lights - they don't work) but i thought nothing of it. However when i backed out the driveway, the car felt funny. There was a strange vibration, which i immediately thought was a flat tyre. Checked and nothing. As i drove down the street, the car and steering felt strange, and the transfer case kept popping out of 2wd into 4wd.

Then i got to the first corner, and the car was VERY hard to steer. The tyres were all making skidding noises and i figured that the centre diff was in fact locked. The transfer lever would still not stay in 2wd and the light kept flashing.

I only needed to get 5 minutes down the road so i kept driving and held the transfer lever. Took it really slowly around the corners.

2 hours later i got back in the car for the two minutes home. The centre diff lock light had stopped flashing and the transfer leaver was not jumping out of 2wd. All good i thought, however the centre diff is obviously still locked and i don't know what to do!!! HELP ME!!!

For a start , fix the front lights so you know what it is doing. Put some new bulbs in there.

Mine often jumps back into 4H if I don't hold it in 2wd until something inside the transfer case disengages - I find holding in 2wd and gently steering side to side does it, can normally "feel" it let go. But my centre diff lock doesn't normally give me trouble.

Silly question, but do you have a front locker of any description?

Agreed on both counts.

Try reversing, or jack one wheel off the ground to remove transmission windup

Agian, Mine used to do the same thing. and like scott said, i would steer left to right slowely, and it would pop back out. for some reason mine would pop out sooner in rev than in forward :?
