Not sure about the MTZ's but if it helps I have a STT in the shed that has a hole in the side wall :x

From what I have been told coopers have weak sidewalls for some reason.

they are both a good tyre. Apparently MTZ are a bit softer & hence wear abit quicker(better wet weather grip?), both out of the same factory.

thats intersting. thought Cooper were strong in the side wall.... and think i would prefer a softer compound... for wet roads at least... cheers blokes...

Cooper=poo IMHO

I have seen and heard of even more coopers completely de-laminating ie: the whole tread flying off and doing a number on the guards. They are a mass produced tyre built for american conditions with an overly large advertising budget.

Mickey Thompsons are also not the be all and end all that some people make them out to be, however I do like the MTZ's and would pick them over any cooper any day of the week.

To contrast that though - im on my 2nd set of Coopers - and the current ones are the STT armorteks... and im in love with them! theyre dead quiet, stick like shit to a blanket in all conditions and they can be balanced on a rim (a lot of muddies dont balance up too well). To top all that off, they've hardly worn while i've had them, and i treat my tyres rough.

i just sold 285 STT's for some 315 MTZ's and found the coopers awesome in the mud but chipped sidewalls easy.
MTZ's are the way to go, great wearing

Look at their production figures. They're hardly "mass produced" compared to something like Goodyear or BFG.

I won't argue with the comment about the advertising budget.

Even if they are made in the same factory, using the same equipment, operated by the same people?

I have STTs and am very happy with everything except the wear. That's not because I think the wear is excessive (probably better than the MT/Rs I had) but because my S/Ts wore much better.

Next time around I will look at the MTZ, but I'm not sure I won't go back to the S/Ts.

Hardly any releveance in where they are made. Coopers, M/T's and Procomp are from the same factory, just as RidePro, EFS, and Terrain Tamer Shocks are form the same factory.
The specs they are made to are not the same.
Personally, i'd look at the MTZs or Procomps

He was criticizing Coopers because some of their tyres have delaminated, which Coopers have acknowledged was a manufacturing fault.

Hmmm. Coopers are bad because they made faulty tyres. M/T and Procomp tyres are made by Coopers - but they're not bad, because where they are made has no relevance.

OK, I can see that.

So, all Coopers need to do now is learn to make their own tyres the same way that they make other tyres. Gee. How dopey can they be?

I was just stating my opinion based on what I have seen, take is as you will. Personally I think there are better priced, better built, better designed tyres on the market ie: maxxis.

And in regard to the balancing, I hear this alot and I think it is in part the fault of useless/lazy tyre fitters. I have never had trouble getting any offroad tyre balanced and even my current simex extreme trekkers are balanced fine, granted there is a bit of weight on them but they still balance. Cannot speak for swampers though which I hear are hard to balance.

coopers

Cooper all the way matey, my old STT's did 47,000 when i sold it they were 2/3 worn, not bad for a mud tyre that gets treated rough by me!!!
Im giving the baja claws a shot at moment

I've had both the Cooper ST and STT and MT MTZ. The MTZ are far quieter on the bitumen than the coopers. Purposely drove on both the same day so I could sense the difference. The MTZ seem to grip the wet bitumen better.

This is second hand info but heard it first hand from the guys. We had 4 teams compete in OBC this year from South Africa. Granted we have way little experience there. The yellow Patrol shorty had MTZ's on and the white Prado had STT's on. I specifically asked them both about their tyre choices. Cris and Warner in the Prado reckon they couldn't have picked a better tyre. One puncture as far as I know in the event. Denis destroyed 2 MTZ's and reckon he won't touch Mickey Thompson again.

I worked in two tyre shops as a young feller, I i'll say straight up that AT and MT tyres can be a little hard to balance. It differs from tyre to tyre, but generally they require a bit more attention. Sometimes they just cant be balanced 100% either.

I'm getting my ET's balanced as we speak, so that will be interesting. Never had any weird balancing issues with ANY of my radial claws either. One of my mates just got some 31" MTZ's for his hilux and i noted that they have minimum weights on them also.

x2.

I've got MTZs I am happy with them and think the are the ducks nuts. I had BFG MTs before that and they were great aswell.

I know plenty of punters with Goodyear MTRs and plenty with Cooper STTs and they are all very happy with what they purchased. There is just no pleasing some people no matter how good your product is.

Tyres are designed for a specific purpose. If you expect a mud terrain to behave like an HT on the bitumen then you are an idiot. Likewise if you expect an HT to perform well in mud or on gibber plains your expecting a bit much. If you don't like highway noise from a mud terrain get an AT and stop complaining.

What's better a ford, a holden, a camry or a magna?

One thing I will say about the MTZs is that the initial wear is pretty quick! I though I was going to be through them in 25,000kms. I had a chat to the boys at Guests in Fairfield whee I bought them from and they thought the exact same thing when they put a set on one of their trucks.

According to Mickey Thompson it is just "Lugg Compression" and aparently after the first 10,000km the tread wear is fantastic. I'm coming up to 10,000 on mine now and the initial wear seems to have slowed.

I have MTZ's and find them great both on and off road. Are great on wet roads pretty quiet as well. Have not used coopers so can not comment on them.

Other the years.
I have ran my BFG ATs to the beyond there wear marks. Only one flat, small rock through center of tread.
BFG Muds, worn way past the wear marks. Had one puncture through the tread from a nail and another destroyed itself from hi speed and low pressure.
Had some Cooper STT's. Worn way past the tread marks. Only tore off one lug to wire and it still held air.
Last set of bald tyres where MT/R's, they made it to the wear marks and now sit in the back yard keeping the rims of the ground.

Set of retreads on a car I brought. Delaminated 3 out of 4 and found when I got home the spare had been plugged. So dont recommend retreads in very hot summers on the freeway.
