Hi, how much kms can the 2.8 turbo diesel 6cyl pull before it needs a rebuild. I know a few that have gone for rebuilds a lot earlier than the 4.2 diesel motors?Which motor wuld you recommend i go for?
Thanks

The issues isnt just longevity and relibility - its also drivability.
I know many people with a 2.8 who wish they had a 4.2 but no 4.2 owners who want a 2.8..............

Dont get scared off the 2.8s from all the chit chat, if ys gettin 1 just look around for a tidy 1 with reasonable ks. Plenty of small cheap mods to make em go quite good. i bought 1 about 2 months ago off an old fella that had REALLY looked after it and then i did some mods and im very very happy with it in general. ive drivin 4.2s and they are fine too just look around for a good buy dont dtress too much on the motor as they are both capable 4wds.

My old GQ was 4.2, the new GU shorty 2.8
Given the chance, I'd have gone for a 4.2, but they aren't available.
On road, the 2.8 would leave the 4.2 behind, but off road, and reliabilty, the 4.2 leaves the 2.8 for dead.
It all depends on what you intend to do, how much you want to spend etc.
IMO a TD42T would be the best way to go.

ive got a 98 mod gu 2.8 wagon, with 231000 ks on the clok (about) its got 2.5 inch spring lift and 33" BFG muddies, with a draw system in the back, it also has a 2 3/4" exahust turbo back. i take it to glass house wheeling almost every weekend and drive it every day for work. most of my mates have the 4.2 in eiather wagons or utes and mine keeps up with them no problems, about the only limiting facotr is the power out put at the rear wheels, but thats eaily over come with a bit more right boot.

I bought a 2.8 with 169k kls on the clock, it had a new turbo 12 months before I bought it, I paid $3k as the engine was ceased and the gearbox wouldn't go into first gear. Its now a TD42 with a roller bearing turbo modded pump and ebay top mount cooler.
Cheers

i also have had 3 gu patrols, one with a 4.2 and the others with the 2.8. like many say they are not a problem on the road at all, offroad they are fine if you keep it in the rev range (you will find the band where it likes to sit with power and torque) but if you dont then i think this is where they get their bad name from.
the only problems i had with the 2.8 was the turbo's (one engine did have heaps of ks on it though) and the injectors. other than that i found them good on fuel, enough power for what i was doing and a reliable engine.
cheers mark
