Went to register my GU today, I've replaced the blown up 2.8 with a TD42 Turbo. Open the bonnet and the guy says "whats this? These never came out with top mount intercoolers" Granted mine is a 600x300 Ebay job but really. I showed him the factory scoop and explained that not only did the 2.8 but also the 4.2(some) and 3.0L diesels all have top mount intercooers standard, glad I haven't fitted the big scoop yet! Then he starts looking for the VIN number, at the front chassis rail where it is on a GQ, I point it out under the drivers door on the chassis and he writes it down, just after he says "Thats right I forgot they moved it down there when they added power steering, prior to power steering it was up here on the drivers side, then they moved it to the passenger side" I felt like saying "what in 1960!" but refrained and said "Gee a Patrol without power steering, I haven't seen one of those. Buy this time he was red faced and shaking, we went inside and to my surprise he proceeded to do the paperwork. Then the question "What's it worth?" Obvious answer, "I have the receipt for $3000, I paid that as it had a brocken engine and gearbox." "Well whats it worth now?" he says. I reply "Iv'e spent $10k on getting it going, but surely I've already paid tax on the parts I bought, Is't that taxing me twice?" He writes $5000 in the value, completes the paperwork and hands me the rego and plates.
WTF.
WTF.

Bought fuel or food lately? Being taxed only twice would be nice.PGS 4WD wrote:Is't that taxing me twice?" .
anyway still cheap at $5k, but can understand what ya saying.
At least he was partially intelligent, last time I had a car re regoed it was a 250Xflow foulcan.
The guy at Vic Roads opens the bonnet and say's "Ahh she's got the big V8 in her"
I just went Uh-Hu, didn't seem worth the hassle to try and educate the bloke.
I get what you are saying about being double taxed though, welcome to Aus

They can legally charge you the "market value" stamp duty on the vehicle as a whole, regardless of what you paid for it.
Got stung an extra $80 once (after the fact, letter in the mail) on a Vitara because " they didn't agree what I paid for it was what it was worth". Done deal, not recourse (well, not worth it for $80 anyway). Next time you fill out the form, actually read it, it says "what's the value" not "what did you pay" ... or something to that affect.
Cawks! ... but that's VicRoads for you ...

The best of my knowledge, don't need any engineers if it's a motor that was offered as part of the manufacturers lineup for same model/year.matthewK wrote:i thought for your patrol you would of need and engineers ticket
because it had 2.8 and thats what it was built with and you changed it over to 4.2turb ,
isnt thats right?

I know all of the people at my local VicRoads - so i get looked after ok.
I had my 180B valued at $500 (minimum amount allowed). The guy clearly saw how much shit was on it, but cause it looks so bloody rough on the outside I said "Take a look at it. Its over 30 years old, hasn't got a straight panel on it. What would you pay for it??" (silence and blank stare) "$500 it is then".
The GQ was different. When i called Vicroads to book the registration inspection, the lady told me the market value of $8000-$10,000, and quoted me the fees accordingly. I said "Shit! Hope i can get that much for it when i sell it!! Does it matter that i only paid $2000 for it?" Reply "Sorry sir, our RedBook market value is the standard pricing for all fees".
Anyway, when the time came, i ended up only paying fees for a $2000 car.
I love my redneck bumpkin town!! (sometimes).

that is correct, as it is already available off the showroom floor as an option in that model, you are not actually changing anything. So all the hard expensive work is done for you. its like taking a petrol gq and dropping the diesel engine inRoldIT wrote:The best of my knowledge, don't need any engineers if it's a motor that was offered as part of the manufacturers lineup for same model/year.matthewK wrote:i thought for your patrol you would of need and engineers ticket

long story , I wrote one my self for $300 and signed it, Dad.
They never queried the receipt saying "DAD" but did the amount that was written down.
DEATH TO VICROADS!!!!!!!!
went to register my mates nissan silvia for him yesterday. same deal as joel. car came out of the factory with ca18det (1.8l turbo) and the car has an sr20det in it now. due to the fact that its more than a 10% power increase that car needs engineering even though those models had the sr20det in them from factory aswell.
Just because it was an s13 i had two blokes going over the car. now it needs engineering for the sr20 when its totally unnecessary

I went through all that when i had my silvia in vic. Originally CA18DE and changed to SR20DET, Vicroads didnt care about the power increase, they said the SR20 version of the silvia was a different car to the CA18 version so had to get an engineers certificate.hokey wrote:DEATH TO VICROADS!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the most highly taxed country in the world.
Tax revenue is 51.3% of Sweden's GDP, 50.3 Denmark, 45.4 Belgium, 44.3 Norway, 44.0 France...all countries with astounding standard of living.
Australia is 27th at 30.9% below NZ at 17 with 36.6% of GDP
But it was stiff of Vicroads. I paid $2k for my car and payed the comparable $80 stamp duty. Even though the market worth is closer to $4k
At first I thought it was a sea anemone, upon closer inspection I realised it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.
vicroads are the silliest norti werd in geelong or colac.
i have managed to pass an injected 304 holden V8 in VK commodore (custom made ute no the less). asked if it was a standard fitted motor to that vehicle....i answered yes and away i went........till i got defected and the rwc inspector asked for engineers cert for the v8 (it was engineered for a vn V6 motor).
Another m8 also passed a 3t celica motor in his KE20 corolla by modifying the standard 3k air cleaner to fit the 3t and they didnt ask ne questions whatsoever.

Asking a bit much, i rekon your mate is as dumb as dog shit for trying to push something through the rego without the approriate engineering. People like your mate is exactly why they make it tougher and tougher to modify vehicles.

Thats what I said, he responded that it was taxable on the vehicle as it was at the time of registration, could have been taxed on $20k so I'm not complaining, it's just how usleess and inconsistant they are.Man of Cheese wrote:so you paid stamp duty on $5000 yea man WTF i would have said tax me on the $3000 thats how much i paid for it.
