i was deep in the process of stripping down my nh paj, when i found a metal box in the middle of the car, under centre console. Box has only 2 wires going in and is about 100mm cubed. Curiosity got the better of me and i took it apart only to have it pour a light oil all over me. What the hell is this thing? Only thing i can think of is a rollover fuel pump cutout? What kind of oil do you put back in it?

Was the oil blue?

nah, it was crystal clear, and about the consistency of canola oil, maybe less viscous still

Does your car have an airbag?

Not on an NH...... I would go with the rollover fuel cutoff. Maybe a fish pond............. for fish that like oil?

I have wrecked 2 x SWB NH's and 1 x LWB NL (with airbags) and none had anything under the centre console...
Your avatar is not the one you are talking about???

ha, found it in the Haynes manual (which is bloody surprising, cause that manual is the most sh!te car manual i have ever owned). it is the 'G-Sensor' and contributes a measurement of decelleration forces to the ABS controller. looks like i have frigged it tho, i wonder if you can just top it up with some cooking oil? lol.
NJ, nope this on is an NH GLS, full electrics options.

You probably can. A G-Sensor is an accelerometer, and many of them are essentially a weight on a displacement sensor, which measures how the weight moves under acceleration/braking/cornering. The oil is probably there for damping (a bit like the liquid in the floating golf ball) so any oil with similar viscosity is probably adequate.
Personally, I'd go some parafin from a chemist, but a nice early harvest extra virgin olive oil could be OK. Might come in handy for the occasional cooking emergency on a camping trip, too.
