BODY SWAP LEGALITIES??

I'm wondering about whats involved in the paperwork side of things in order to do a body swap. if the engine is on the original chassis can another body just be put on no worries? what, if any compliance plates are required? i heard that it must be a body from a latter model than the chassis is this true?
i know there must be afew people on here who have done this before after a roll, how hard was it to get back on the road?
In the process of organizing this atm and having trouble getting an answer out of anyone

If you replace a soft top with a soft top then just swap bodies and refit your old compliance plates to the new body..
There are no numbers stamped in the bodies.
If you swap a hardtop to soft top or visa versa you will probably require a mod plate, unless like IslandVitara did, you convince the RWC bloke that VAN means soft top with a canopy.

I rang vicroads when i swapped my smooshed softtop for a hardtop, they said the body is separate from teh chassis and isnt a structural member, so its fine.

hmmm, well i spent all day today on the phone to QLD transport and engineers and they said that i needed to go through the engineering process which i really don't want to do, as the chassis is modified and it will cost far to much a bring back to standard. They also said that the body must be off a latter model car, and must be also checked and complianced by and engineer with a letter sent to QLD transport confirming this!
My admittedly dodgie idea of doing the work and swapping the name plates on the firewalls for the original chassis number on the first body apparently carries a 12 month stint in prison and a wooping great fine so i don't think i'l be doing that anymore.
After doing the resurch it seems in QLD it's easyer to just buy another sierra and swap the good bits over

Just checking, not doubting you. Did QT realise it was a replacement body from the same type of car or could they have thought it was entirely different like a commodore bodied patrol etc.

O they fully understood what i wanted to do, as did the engineers, and it definatly was doable but required jumping through all the hoops, which i do not have time or money for. to fully explain my situation neither part is currently registered, was working towards rego, and apparently a chassis without a body counts as a satutory write off, as such all work must be fully engineered before a sarogate plate will be issued to tie up the loose ends, paperwork wize.
In the practical world you would take same chassis, same engine, swap with identical bodys and you'd b all sweet, but o well

its just everything to do with the modifyed vehical scene, be it 4WD lowriders or fast cars. it pisses me off. mite take up knitting and sit on the varandeh watching young lunitics drive around in there modded cars getting fines for modifyed exhausts or lowered suspension incorrectly positioned number plate or ..... the list can go on
what is really wrong with driving this around

Or you could just rivet the compliance plate onto your new body and forget about the legalities and I'd challange any plod to figure it out if they didn't read this post.
I know this will sound like typical hoon speak and piss Grimbo off but fark the law.

my sierra softop/VAN is rego'd! yes i did a bodyswap, i also took out the rear seats. i went to get it mod plated n told the guy id taken the seats out and did a bodyswap. they had no problem with the bodswap, as its the same car, and no major modification was done which is true. QT had no problems either, dont think the nice old lady who served me could tell the difference? lol there is no difference!

When I did my coily body swap years ago, it was a HT previously and I put a ST body on it.
NSW RTA made me put the plates from the original car onto the new body's firewall, but then registered it according to the numbers stamped on the chassis, as usual.

exactly, theres no major modification done so i cant see the problem. a softop with a canopy is a wagon with out it its a ute?

Actually, not true. A ute with a canopy is a commercial. A wagon is a wagon. a soft top with no rear seats is normally a ute. A soft top with rear seats is generally a wagon or a "multi"
The difference will be what ADR's the car has to comply with. You can't reduce the number of ADR's a car complies with. That's why it's complicated and age etc becomes very important.
