Redundant 'normal level' tail lights

Sorry if this is a well answered question - haven't found any reference to it: Why are 4wds fitted with low level bumber mounted tail lights leaving the normal level tail lights pretty much redundant? Is it legal to have both sets working, and if so, is it very easy to wire up?
I only ask after following another Pajero on a rainy highway at night and was surprised at how un-noticeable the tail lights and indicators were under these conditions.

You ever turned your fog lights on? I reckon it would make the brake lights pretty damn blinding if you hooked them up to turn on while braking.

I believe ADR's stipulate that the lights have to be seen from a certain angle. The spare wheel blocks the view so we are left with the bumper lights only. You will notice that the NS has moved the wheel to the centre and now has the top ones only.

I fitted stop/tail combination in there and they work fine.

Brilliant! Perfectly logical answer - well done!

So shouldn't be any problem (legally) with both sets wired up.

Legally no! I had mine wired up for four years without any enquiries from the rozzers....and no one ran up my arse either.

Heheh in a 2,000 kg barge like a Pajero I doubt that you would be out braking many cars :D
Or atleast thats my view on why no one runs up my arse :)

Just had a look at the 'upper' lights and they seem to have dummy lenses and no wiring where the indicators should go. Tisk.

"Legally" i was told by an auto elecy that you cant have more than 3 brake lights. :?:

I have no idea if that was just a load of bull or not, but may pay to find out.

Would be better though to use the top than the bottom ones though.

Prado's and late model Jackeroos have 5 brake lights (one high mount, 2 on the body and 2 in the bumper). 4 of these are brake/tail combo's and they also have 4 blinkers all from the factory. Why Mitsi and Nissan (GU's are the same) insist on having different systems is beyond me as legally it must be ok.
NH and NJ on are different.
NJ on has 4 indicators (2 bumper & 2 body) and the fog lamps on the body it's easy on these models to convert the fog lamps to tail/brake combo's thus making them the same as Prado's and late model Jackeroos.
The fog lamps are the same intensity as a normal brake lamp.
The NH takes a bit more work to get this combo.
I've done this conversion on an NH and an NJ - works well.
I also used Phillips halogen (20Watt) reverse globes and they are great for reversing on night drives as they provide much more light.
I've also used the Narva reverse light beeper/halogen globe combo and these also work well.

I did mine just recently, just got the park/stop lights out of one at the wreckers and with a bit of leatherman action to make the fittings click into where the fog lights used to go and some short wires and terminal blocks all is done. Rewired the fog lights up to 2 small spotties under rear bumper and use them for reversing lights when its real dark.

Took about an hour and a half to do!!!
