Weird rear diff noise

My 91 GXL has a funny noise coming from the rear diff. It happens on only perhaps 1 in 20 standing starts, but the other day it did happen at two sets of traffic lights in a row.
The noise sounds a bit like a mud tyre catching on a mud flap, a sort of thunk thunk thunk type sound. It does it for less than 3 seconds and only ever from a standing start. The rest of the time it makes no noises and operates fine. The diff has an air locker in it, which also works fine.
Have I provided enough detail? Any other info useful?
Any ideas what the problem might be?
I am driving it Sydney-Melbourne and back soon and would like to get it sorted.
Any ideas, tips or input appreaciated.
Cheers
Chris
