They have been discussed a fair bit, I'd run a quick search and see what you pull up.

(I think its a lot of money for a re-tread)

There was a fairly detailed write up in 4WD Monthly about an issue or 2 ago.

They are also not a re-tread, they are rather a "Re-mould" where they mould the complete carcas including sidewall!

Saw a set in a tyre shop on the weekend. Second Hand.
Though it looked like they hadn't done many kms, had a fair bit of uneven wear. I don't see that they'd get great run on the bitumen, pretty soft.
Probably be good offroad.
One thing I don't like so much about the Remould is that you can't see what the original case was, or if it had any damage to it.
If I was on a tight budget, I'd go for a cheap new one, or second hand.
Not much dollar difference but at least you can see what you're getting.

Used them (and I do sell them as well as other offroad tyres).

Great for the money.

Drive well (radial). Intensive QC, lots of cases rejected. Have you seen other agressive off road tyres with simmilar wear? I do every day.

Yes, most more aggressive offroad tyres are going to get some uneven wear. Just for the amount of wear on the tyres for the kms, made me think that possibly the case underneath wasn't strong enough for the amount of rubber layed over the top, allowing block squirm. You've taken a tyre/case that that was designed to have a particular pattern and amount of tread on it, driven it for however many kms... off road on road, who knows. Then you've buffed it, moulded another tread pattern and extra rubber to it. There is definitely extra rubber in the Remould, pick one up. The original case wasn't designed to hold that rubber. Not saying that it can't, just weighing up some thoughts.
I have been in the tyre industry for a fair portion of my life. Have sold all makes and models, including remoulds. There have been remoulds that have had brilliant runs, and also some that haven't gone exceptionally well at all. This is concurrent through all brands of tyres, not just remoulds though.
I don't doubt that they are quite stringent in their evaluation of which case is acceptable to use, I am not knocking Remoulds, they definitely serve their purpose. They can be good tyres. I personally, am not convinced that the mongrels are great tyres from looking at a set. However I've never driven on them.
I'm not saying that if you are buying these or have bought them, you're crazy. I am saying, me personally, Id want to consider it very carefully. There's 100+ brands of tyre in the market place, and yes some cleanskin new tyres on the cheaper end probably aren't real flash but at least you can see what you've got.
Tyres are a personal thing, Different Driving style and application, suit different sorts of tyres. There is no one tyre out there that everyone is going to be 100% happy with. Like I said Tyres are a personal preference.
This is my personal opinion, there is no real black and white with tyre (oh sorry they're all black  ). All you can do is talk to people with a similar driving style and want from there tyres as you, and try them.
That's my say. Feel free to voice yours :D

The ones I have seen are not bead to bead remoulds. Cos on the side they say mtorway mongrels and on the other they say BFG AT or hankock RT or something.
So only the outer sidewall gets a coating of the new rubber.

I havent seen the mongrels in action but my uncle has the MT on his NM Paj as play tires and they get treated like crap and they still come back for more. They have so far been to the flinders, alot of high country and also alot of stuff around melb (ie Toolangie, Gembrook etc).

The ones I looked at were the centipede pattern, therefor directional. The Outside of the tyre is different depending on which side of the vehicle its for. The ones I looked at were moulded both sidewalls. Are there a few different patterns? Locky, can you tell us this?

Uh, so there may be infact some differences between the differant patturns that they offer, i have always seen the mongrels with both side walls done, o may have to go shopping and have a look at a store with a range of their tyres

the 32's are bead to bead
the 33's are outside bead to inner edge of tread.

that's what i've seen on the few sets that i've looked at. my 32's are a full remould, whereas a guy i know in victoria, you could read 'procomp' on the inside edge of his 33's

antt,

having a set of your own, how do you find they perform? Do you use them for on road/off road or just off road? Also how does the noise compare to a normal Mud Terrain tyre?

Dave.

i can't really say too much yet. only had em for about 2 months, and the only time i've used em offroad was cruising round landcruiser mountain park on the weekend. i did drive on them all the way from the southside of brisbane up to the park, and have driven on them a few times around brissy, and they haven't seemed to wear at all, but i've probably only run up 600km's on em.

they're noisy on the road, but what do you expect from almost a tractor tyre? i do get a bit of a vib through the steering wheel at certain speeds, but none of them are balanced, so thats probably the main reason.

once i've run em a few times i'll let people know how they go.

I run the mongrels on road and i think they wear the same as the bfg muds
I used them in the 2003 nissan trials on my 80# and came first in production class.
I competed for the OZ ROCK CRAWLERS club see this months australian 4WD monthly
they work well

Has anyone done a few more kms on them? I am interested to know what sort of run they are getting as a daily driver aswell as an offroader. My main concern is that I have seen numerous retreads in the 4WD tyres seperate when used as a daily driver, admittedly mostly over the summer period.
They build up too much heat and let go. All the extra rubber means that they don't disperse the heat as well.
Offroad won't be as harsh on them (in a heat sense) as travelling a reasonable amount of kms on the bitumen.
Do they stand up to the road travelling temperature?.. especially in the warmer climate and under load.
Any one that can give us a little bit more feedback on this will be greatly appreciated.

ryano, when i took mine up to lcmp, i stopped at caboolture (1.5hr drive) to check to see how warm they were getting, cause we've had incidents with mud terrains getting extremely hot under freeway conditions. they were no hotter than any other mud tyre when you run them on the freeway

Another question... What sort of pressures are you running? We found that if we bumped the pressures up a bit that they run a bit cooler.
Is this true in your case too?
How much of a load were you carrying?

Thanks,
Ryano

Are your 32's 10.5 or 11.5 inch wide?
How much did you pay?

Thanks

Dave

Do you drive on them every day?
If so, how many kms a day do you do and at what speed?
Sorry about the 20 questions, just researching and comparing to other tyres I have experienced.
I am always open to information.
From what I've been told... all heresay, the mongrels in a 32 are 10.5 due to being on a 31x10.50R15 case. The extra rubber bringing them into the 32" category.
Correct if I'm wrong.

10.5in wide

i got em off overkill on this board 'second hand' (they hadn't ever been driven on) with rims, for $350 :D

i doubt you'd get em for that price, but apparently theyre around $180 each for the 32's new ;)

ryano, i have another set of tyres, and yes, i'm pretty sure they're moulded onto a 31

well, went out for a quick play this morning at ormeau to test the tyres for clearance, but i decided to put the back ones on in reverse to see if it made any difference. well it certainly did, at about 85kph the back tyres started to get a VERY bad shake up, so i wouldn't recommend running them in reverse if you drive it on the road.

A mate of mine and i used the 32" mongrels on a double locked suzuki ute with a Mini spool in the rear, and we drove it from logan to LCMP to do the winch challange on them and competed on them at 8psi and drove home no problems,

and then we drove the car down to warhoupe for the 3rd round of the winch challange but we thought we'd drive down on another set of tires (BFG AT 32") but ended up swapping them on the way down and we found the mongrels drove heaps better and didn't track as much

we've never had a problem with them in competition stiuations !!!
and we were hard on the car too

does any one know who sells them in NSW? Big balls offroad website has a link to them under the tyres they sell but there is nothing there. I also tried the motorway website and they haven't replied to an email yet.

I saw a set upclose today on a rangie, i think they were the 33"s cos they weren't bead to bead, they were bead to the edge of the tread.
bridgestone duellers as the donor carcass.
maybe they were 32"s.

the guy lives down the road, and i can hear him coming for ages,
the chunky mongrels and the sweet sounding rangie v8

:) :D

Muddies

Slightly Off topic, but I found the muddies (not mongrels) wore extremely quickly on an 80 series. I tried to speak with Motorway about the tyres and they didnt really want to talk about their warranty. I guess this is common with most off road tyres though.

My observations on the muddies is that they seem to work really well on light trucks, but not on heavier ones like cruisers and patrols. Just my 20c worth
