Hi,

Has anyone used GPS navigation for offroad?

I'm after something that will let me map out a route on my computer, then I transfer it to a navigator and it navaigates for me so I don't need to read maps all the time.

I had a look at a package that includes a Garmin GPS unit, oztopo maps, and map source.

Any suggestions or comments would be very helpful.

depends on what tye of hardware you want to run in the car, ie a WindowsCE system or a laptop...

I'm in the process off putting a GPS system together. I've gone for a Dell X51v PDA that has VGA out capabilities. The PDA will run both point to point systems like Destinator and OziexplorerCE. I've just picked up a 10.4" LCD screen that I've hooked the PDA up to. Here's a couple of photos I took this arvo of the set up. I just need to figure out how to mount it all in my 80 series.

Mapsource is expensive and I found it not to be accurate at all for bush tracks. I have since loaded Shonky Maps which have proved to be pretty good outside of the city and also have topo over the top aswell. Best of all they are a free download. Shonky Maps are based on the Natmap Raster 250 so only main arterials in citys are on Shonky.

You can plot your way points and route files in Oziexplorer and upload them through your USB port to your GPS for navigation.

If I had my time again, I would go down the Oziexplorer route with a decent sized screen.

I have also heard good things about the Hema Maps unit which runs Oziexplorer and acts as a navigator in cities. I think its about $1,000 though!

I'm going to mention another route, I'm about to road test the Magellan XL hand held GPS with HEMA desert tracks loaded. I have only road tested so far around the Northern rivers of NSW but I will use it to navigate to Cameron's Corner and beyond next week. so far the HEMA maps look ok. it won't navigate you through a city but it will show you where you are at any given time. I don't know about you but I hate the idea of some dude saying; " In 100m turn left" or "Wrong way turn around and go back" I mean to say, if it was a real person I'd tell them to shut up hey!! so anyway if you are interested I'll let you know how it goes. and I believe at this stage you can uploads Oziexplorer maps to it too but I'm yet to do that as i only have had the unit for a week

really priceless - well $200 all up aand it views pics, movies plays mp3 etc etc. easy to spend this on paper maps that have limited life

Oh i forgot to mention i found my ipaq in the middle of the road right outside my house - barely a scratch on it
