Hi

I just got a few questions about a late model Toyota Hilux's that have a IFS front end.

I hear and read everyone complaining how bad an independent front end is off road, but whats it really like. Im looking at buying a late model hilux to use for everyday driving as well as camping, touring, fishing trips. Also looking at doing a trip to cape york in it.

If I put a decent set of tyres on it and maybe a rear locker, what will it be like off road?

I dont want it for serious four wheelin, I have a suzi sierra to do that in.

Thanks

Jason

With tyres and a rear lock it will be good for what you have said.

my truck was originaly ifs offroad i had no troubles and saved alot of solid trucks the main problem i had was breaking cv's and the front diff is only a 7.5inch centre a little bit weak i broke 1 of them to that is when i went to solid and dont even do enough wheeling to give you a good comparison but to sum it up the ifs was a brilliant truck for travelling i did a few long trips and was capable enough offroad for what you want to use it for it will be fine

1 thing if you do buy one dont wind up the torsion bars i did it to mine and cracked the chassis rail on two of three bolts

I have IFS and Im choppin it out soon  .
But as for general light wheeling mud, sand etc it works just fine.
The only thing it aint to good on is twisty terain(ruts) and rock etc.
But a rear airlocker will help there.
Good tyres are important too.
Go for something like a Goodyear wrangler MTR.

With mine I tossed the front swaybar in the bin. Didnt effect onroad handling much at all just a little(only a very little) more roll round corners.
When you dont have much wheel travel to start with you need to squeeze out the most you can :)

Just go the IFS and if you get sick of its short comings then Solid axle swap it later

with tyres, rear locker and decent set of shocks, it will be more than capable for what you want. we have used ours on heaps of long touring trips as well as weekend fun. I also invested in a set of heavy duty torsion bars to support the weight of the steel bar.

ifs isnt as bad as most of the goons on here make out. it rides alot better on the road than rigid front. a stock ifs will perform the same as a solid front offroad. as for breaking cv's, i havent broken ne yet and i am running 33'' baja claws.

what engine are you thinking of getting? if it is standard diesel dont worry about cv's breaking. if its turbo diesel buy a spare inner and outer cv to take with you i busted my first cv last week. Low range torque at full lock with wheels articulated to the maximum can pop them....keep a check on the boots, they have a circlip inside that hold the cv in place.

if the boot is dislodged the cv will pop out and break...watch the boot in very rough conditions and you'll be fine.

32x11.5x15 tyres are the best size as they fit on without any lift and don't overtorque the engine and driveline.
