Does anyone know if it's possible to change the Feroza gearbox for one with better gear ratio's?

I may need a new gearbox and I just want to know what my options are before buying a 2nd hand Feroza one.

When you say "better gear ratios" - what exactly are you after ?

AFAIK the only bolt on options are the A44D or A44DE automatics. The A44D is a Feroza version whilst the DE is a Suzuki variant.

Both require the A44D bellhousing and torque converter, The D is a bolt in swap whilst the DE and transfer is a long sucker and is a lot more work but can be fitted with crawler gears.

Count on around $1250 for a D box and bits a lot more for a fitted DE but it works VERY WELL and gives you options the D doesn't have

By better gear ratio's I mean shorter gears in the transfer case.

I'm still working on mine and I'm hoping it wont need to be replaced. Should know if it works by the end of tomorrow.

There are no crawler gears for the Feroza TCase... Ages ago I started looking at having some made but couldn't get a second hand TCase ( even broken would have been ok ) to do the work on at a reasonable price so gave up. Was probably the right decision in hindsight.

As for the A44DE and Vitara TCase its a big job. Didn't really know if it was going to all fit when I started, just kept modifying and making parts as I went along.

The A44D ( the feroza auto ) is much simpler as the parts are factory but there are no gears for the tcase. The auto helps heaps but without gears I wonder if its really worth the effort.

The vit tcase's output shaft is much higher than the Feroza, and the box much longer and that causes all manner of significant engineering issues none of which can be solved without serious work.

In hindsight obviously learn't many lessons, but didn't doccument it as the parts kept changing. Unless you have full engineering facilities or VERY deep pockets and lots of time I'd say its not feasible.

But - its a fantastic conversion if your prepared to spend the time and $$, but then it raises the issues of lockers, engine and suspension.... I think its do nothing and be happy "nearly stock" or go all the way.

THe mouse still has lots of work being done and in the pipeline but its a big commitment. don't even think about it if its your daily driver.

Still AFAIK there are no other double locked, geared Feroza's out there - perhaps for good reason :lol:

Sounds like a lot of work and I don't have the knowledge for all those mods. Also, it's my daily driver so I can't have it off the road for long periods.
So I guess I'll keep the standard Feroza gearbox.

Wish I could see the Mouse. Sounds like its a very different Feroza. Do you have pics anywhere?

I think that time is the key, there's just a limit to what can be done to the car that gets you to work......

Also once you start modifying the chances of mechanical failures etc etc start getting larger. A stock(ish) vehicle usual is limited by things like tires etc and doesn't push the mechanicals too hard.

I'd consider getting reliable transport to and from work BEFORE getting too caried away. If you driven on lumpy, bad handling, bad stopping, noisy, aggressive 4WD tires you'll know they aren't a sensible road tyre.
But if you don't have them them a lot of the engineerings wasted off road.

Other will probably have different views but my basic rule is...

"Don't stuff with the car that gets you to work on Mondays"

Mouse having a lunch time nap.... looks pretty normal really. To put things in perspective tyres are 32's ATM.
