Gday all
Have an early 80 -3f manual ,am throwing around different ideas for an engine conversion, not really that keen on a v8.
Would there be any benefit from a falcon conversion in the power stakes or even posibbly a holden v6(lack of torque)being that the 80 is a heavy vehicle.
Both of these engines are common and readily available,or could some one suggest something else.
cheers

If your not looking at alot of extra grunt i would consider the landcruiser 4.5L motor.
Wouldn't bother with a commo 6, not enough torque, and they gulp fuel when in a hilux, let alone a cruiser. The falcon 6 would be a better choice, has more torque. But i would take the cruiser 4.5 over a falcon motor.
What sort of budget do you have??
Any reason for not wanting a V8?? A late model V8, say a commodore LS1 would use less fuel then all of the motors listed above, It is only the extra rego and insurance.

an ls1 using less fuel than the current falcon's 6 in the same application? bit of a stretch considering the falc 6 gets better economy than the alloytech AND the LS1 powered commo's.
a fuel injected crossflow has better power and torque than the 3f. anything newer (4.0 from eb - onwards) will be an improvement...
but the later 80 series 4.5 is a weapon, and would be my choice

Ok maybe the current falcon 6's aren't to bad (don't know match about them) But i do know security in them is a real issue AFAIK when doing a conversion (AU onwards)
I can tell you an LS1 does use less fuel then the 4.5L cruiser motor (i have just done the swap) And commo 6's are hopeless.

there's a plug and play modual for around $200 to sort that out, or plenty of diy info on the web

10 grand would buy one hell of a 1fz-fe, considering the stock internals are good for 500+kw at the wheel...

Ive owned a few 80's including a 3f...although they cop a gut full of baggin, they are a pretty good thing....and cheap.
Whichever way you go will depend on how good you are with a spanner...it is much smarter and cheaper to buy a wreck from pickles for 3k and swap motor or panels....sell parts and make your dollars back. Borrowing the coin and shelling out 7k for a good 1fz with bigger brakes and better everything, gasing it with Kevins redund and using your 3f as an insurance policy will save you 1k every year you keep both...my kids used my old 3f as a kubby house for ages
Engine swaps usually cost twice expected...ad the car is still an early fj...at least it would sell better afterwards
