Priming oil pump

Just wondering if you need to prime the oil pump in a G16B baleno/vitara motor? Ive modified the pickup and had the sump off for a while, so theres no oil in the pump or pipe, just worried it wont draw up the oil initially.
Should i stuff heaps of vaseline into the pump from pickup hole?

should pickup fine
if your worried tip some oil into the filter then fit
give it a crank over with no coil lead.

If it occurs to me, I smear vaseline inside the pump when I'm reassembling it. The idea is to ensure the pump actually creates sufficient suction to lift the oil from the sump. If the lobes are dry, and the gap sufficiently large, there may be sufficient airflow leaking backwards through the pump to prevent it lifting.
Vaseline in the pipe may be harder to suck up than oil, effectively blocking the pump, so the suction may not reach the oil - this could be worse than doing nothing.
Vaseline INSIDE the pump fills any gaps between lobes which might otherwise allow air to leak, so it increases your chances of creating enough vacuum to pull the oil up the pipe.

Air compressor, 2 lt coke bottle with small hole in the bottom, a fitting on lid with hose and fitting on other end to fit oil pressure sender thread.
Take out the oil pressure sender, 3/4 fill the bottle with oil, screw it into the oil pressure sender thread on the engine.
Use compressed air through the small hole hole at the bottom of the coke bottle and it will force the oil through the pump and engine.
Dont worry the coke bottle wont blow up, they can hold heaps of pressure.
It worked on my Triton engine after I rebuilt it anyway. Primed everything up nicely.

now that is one of the best backyard ideas ive heard in a long time

STP oild treatment in the pump when its rebuilt also works very well. Its VERY thick and hangs around if the engine sits.
I use it on all the moving parts of engine rebuilds to ensure lubrication on initial startup especially if the engine has sat around awhile.
It also has no adverse effects on the oild once the engines started.
Like the Coke bottle idea as well....

easiest way is to just give everything a good coat of oil when assembling and fill the engine through the rocker cover - not straight into the sump.
you can fill the filters if you want but its usually not neccessary.

i always simply use vaso, thats all you need. pack it in there if you need to, it has a very low melting point so allows the oil to flow no worries in a matter of seconds. I always use it at work on power steering pumps and the like for that same reason.
