Tow bars

Hey guys,

I have a NL Pajero with a Hayman Ryeece tow bar on it which I use from time to time to tow light loads(6x4 trailer with total weight of 500-600kgs). I have been thinking about trying to get a better departure angle out of my car as currently the thing that always drags is the tow bar.
Which brings me to my point, I have noticed many other Pajeros have their tow bar attached to the rear tow point which is situated in the middle of the rear bumper, what sort of weight limit is there on that location?

When I bought my NL new, I had a tow package fitted. The lousy buggers gave me the cheaper version - it attached to the tow point, not the chassis. From memory, it was rated to tow 1200 kg (braked load). The ball load was 150 kg (I think). My caravan was 1180 kg!!!

To make a short story long, I reinforced it by adding a very heavy square tube section across (attached to the chassis at the proper attach points) and then got slammed up the ass by a Commodore. I had a new bar fitted because the old one was badly bent and cracked, but I now suffer the departure angle problems you refer to. The new bar is 2500 kg and 250 kg ball load, so it comfortably copes with my loading.

I guess that the bar extension did its job because no panel work was even touched in the shunt.

I have a light duty HR bolted to that rear point - it's rated 1200kg, 80kg ball.

The next contact point will be your fuel tank, which doesn't take the abuse as well as the t-bar

Yeah I am aware of this, the majority of contact the towbar gets is just dragging over spoon drains which is quite disapointing when you're running 35 inch tyres.

Further to my earlier posting about the cheapie towbar, about 1 year after teh new bar was fitted, I had reason to take the bar off, and found a heap of rust in the chassis where the tow hook attaches. The panelbeaters had not done a thing about repairing the paint where it could not be seen. It pays to check on ANY work done, even if you don't pay for it directly from your own pocket.

Ive only got the small toung 1200kg rated, tows all i need and more.
When I put the body lift in I drilled 2 new holes in it using the bottom holes as top and new holes as bottom. I still get hung up on it so now 4 bolts and take it off before i go bush.
The fuel tank gard is amazingly strong and slides much better than the tow bar.
