GU TD42T question

i read in a thread the other day that late model GU TD42T intercooled patrols had an ECU, is this correct and what year model did they start fitting them?
im looking at a 2003 and id prefer not to have any ecu,

well they still have a mechanical fuel pump and the 4.2 aint a crd
the 3.0td has a computer

the 4.2 came out with ECU. i think the mechanical pump does the fuel, ecu adjusts the injection timing.
no idea on what year tho.

I think the ECU is only for the EGR operation, Andy at Dzltech will know as hes seen the pumps apart.

All intercooled 4.2tds have a computer but still have mechanical pumps.

Yes they have an ecu. It is used mainly to control injection pump timing advance and egr control. I don't know what year they came in, it isn't anything to be afraid of. You can still make great power out of them.

so when the time comes to up the power are there any differences that may cause any dramas?
i was told the best Injector pump to start with is one from about 2003 is this correct?

You really want a pump that already that already has an 11mm head and rotor. The early ones only had 10mm. This can be identified via the stamped numbers on the side of the pump housing. I don't know when the cut off time was, sorry.

Does anyone know what numbers indicate the 11mm head and rotor?

If you look at the side of the pump, there is a nameplate. It will have a series of numbers, but you are looking for a row that says VE6/11******. The 11 indicates an 11mm h&r.

so all this in mind. Im about to put a 06 GU 4.2 intercooled turbo diesel motor in to a GQ. Am i going to need an ECU even thought im not going to run the EGR.
Reason i ask is i don't have the ECU for that car.
If so does anyone know where i can get one from.

you could just block off the egr and not need the ecu.

im pretty sure you will still need the ecu if you take off the egr. the main reason for them on most modern engine is so the dealers can just plug in there laptop and read whats wrong without having to go and fault find. why not use the fuel system off a non ecu engine or remove the ecu stuff from this engine if thats possible?

i would suspect its one that will have the timing on the pump controled by ecu.
either find an ecu or an older injection pump.

well curiosity got the better of me
electrically unplugged the control valve on the injector pump (so basically simulating not having the computer) & went for a drive round the block. it felt NO different, tho i didnt go hammmering up any hills or anything like that.
as suspected all the vitals were the same - oil pressure, egt & boost.
the only thing was the mil light was flashing at me. once the control valve was plugged back in, light went off
i will say, that if i were to leave it unplugged for a whole tank of diesel i suspect it may effect my consumption slightly & i definitely expect that if i had gone roaring up a big hill i may have been down on power - with respect to what im use to, most likely no worse than a standard td42t - neglecting intercooler.
as for egr you will be better off blocking it off/not having it.
its sole purpose is emissions, but it reduces engine life.

I have injectors from the ECU TD42T in a GQ, they run fine also without the knock sensor hooked up.

is called a needle lift sensor.
& yes it doesnt matter that its not hooked up on a td42 or td42t, it normally sends info TO the computer.
on a td42ti is the number 1 injector

sw1 thanks for the correction, how does the TD42TI alter pump advance? a mate has re-kitted a ve6/10 and ve6/11 with boost comp pumps for me at work, so having seen inside the pumps, is it roughly the same pump with a extra solinoid to push/pull on part of the pump ( I can't remember the names) or different pump all togeter?

well im getting out of my depth here. so someone like andy may correct me. but i will say what i understand it to be.
here goes:
firstly i assume its the same old pump with some additions.
1. a control solenoid, which is located at the bottom of the pump.
2. a hollow metal ring. which sits inside the pump & can rotate.
the guts of the pump sit with in the diameter of the ring & when the ring moves/rotates, timing changes.
the control valve is pulse width modulated. so as the pulse get closer together, the control valve extends a plunger causing the ring to rotate.
as i said - im out of my depth here & this is just my understanding. i maybe corrected.

can anyone tell me what a control solenoid does. and what it normally connects to. If it goes to the computer is there a way around it.
