diesel Pajero purchase advice

Hey all,
Any chance that someone could give me a bit of advice as I'm looking at buying an early to mid 90 model diesel. (the old 4runner looks to be a write off and looking at something a bit better for longer trips anyway) So it's prolly between a later model 4runner and bolt a turbo on, or the Paj.
Any things to look for, advice, suggestions or even websites would be appreciated.
I'm looking at the 2.8 as a preference as we'll load it up with gear a bit.

Oh yeah, 1 more thing,
I have seen some of the later models with leaf rear, is this decided on the Spec of the vehicle (ie GLS vs GLX) or something else? as I really want the coils.

I'm not a hundred percent, but I think the leafs were only on the earlier Gen 2 base model (GL - confused yet?) which didn't have a turbo on the diesel.
To get the 2.8 td you'd need NJ ('93 on) GLX as a minimum.

Ah so it's the NJ, I had seen a cpl of 93 models with the 2.5, but it's been years since i was a mechanic so have sorta lost track of the Paj models. But I'm gettin there again......

Yep Scott is right the NH (91-93) base model GL had leafs all others are rear coils.
If you can stretch it the 2.8 TDI is the go (NJ late 93-96) as it's a much better donk and way more powerful. The drivetrain is the strongest of any Pajero 8" high pinion front diff, massive axles & rear 10" diff, bigger t/case.
Front ARB airlocker will be available in June and eventually ARB are developing a rear locker for it as well.

I believe all GLS models have rear LSD as standard.

It's nice to hear my thoughts are right re the 2.8. I'd driven a cpl of 2.5s and even tho they aren't too bad I thought I would end up back at the old 4runner level powerwise with cargo system, larger rubber and big fuel tanks.
yeah I couldn't believe the size of that rear diff when I had a look at a couple on the weekend (I have been around hiluxs too long now I reckon
I had read a couple of the discussions on the locker and thought that was the case with the rear but wasn't exactly sure. lucky the LSD is decent on them stock I spose.
Any Issues with front diffs failing under fairly hard play?? the surfs and IFS 4runners have a bit of a weak link at the front diff and it's a 7.5" from memory.
BTW thanks again for the info guys, super appreciated, always lotsa fun but also lotsa work lookin for a new car.

CV breakages are fairly rare compared to IFS Hiluxes.
Front diff breakages are virtually unheard of.
I haven't broken a front CV yet in 4yrs (2.5" lift) of thrashing and that's 6 months with a front Detroit.
I've busted 2 rear axles though but the 3.0 V6 ones are much smaller than the 3.5 V6 and 2.8 TDI.
I haven't heard of anyone busting a rear axle on one of those suckers.
They seem to be one of the better IFS set ups.

Comparing a 2.8 TDI Paj (even a GLX) model to a V6 4 Runner or a diesel Surf I'd go the Paj by a country mile.
It's a more practical and versatile vehicle in most respects the drivetrain and 2.8 TDI are very well proven and they will take more abuse than the Tojo on the average.
If you are only going to be doing medium type stuff and it's a daily driver the Paj is a very good choice for an IFS truck.

make sure you get a diesel mechanic to check the motor out for you because diesel motor and fuel pumps cost big dollars to fix
my bro in laws dad has a diesel works shop he does everthing thing from mack trucks to 4wds , he has told me a few horror stores of poeple buying 2nd hand diesels with problems and costing a mint to fix

Thanks for all ya info guys,
I have ended up with a 96 NJ 2.8turbo GLX.
Am super happy with it over the first few days, goes Great, and is nice and comfy.
Now it's time to start trying to find parts for it to fix it up the way I want

Of course, when he says "drop the oil" he means "change the oil" - put some back in afterwards.

yeah, dont worry I worked it out.
I used to be a mechanic, and 1 of the guys that I went to TAFE with was an apprentice at a local dealership. He did a service on a nice new Honda (from memory) and didn't put any oil back in it before the road test!
needless to say the boss was Pi$$ed!
Anyway, yeah will do the oils staright away with the oils I prefer. Very impressed with its power. just hoping that the 32" tyres I had planned to chuck on do not reduce that too much.
Will 32's fit on OK stock height?? looks like it might be a squeeze before I get the 2" lift. (as high as I plan to go on this truck)

Yeah, well I knew diesels are great on juice, I have done a fair few kays in it now and seems not to budge from about 10.5L/100km bush or town! (that's with nice dirty injectors too) Very happy after the last petrol 4cyl.
Will see what it's like on the sand when we go to stockton beach, hopefully next weekend.
(the way I'm going that first 5000k oil change is gunna come up within a month!
